Title: Essex (and Rest of World) peoples in the Alps - June 2023
Post by: Oscar's dad on 04 June, 2014, 12:55:26 pm
On the evening of Friday 13th June (what could possibly go wrong  :hand:  ::-) ) myself, delthebike, Huggy and Tomsk will be squeezing ourselves into my car with bikes atop and a trailer full of camping kit behind, bound for Le Bourg-d'Oisans deep in the Alps of French France.  We are there for 7 nights with the intention of hurling ourselves up some of the iconic Tour de France climbs close by.  The trip is part of my 50th birthday celebrations.

The story has already started HERE (https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=25281.new;topicseen#new) when I hijacked Hummer's thread of 4 years ago.  The rest of the story will no doubt unfold below ...

Squeezing?  ??? No one mentioned squeezing!  :o As the smallest* of the Krew!, read not too lanky, I shall be luxuriating myself into your car while being chauffeured to and from the Alps. I hope you've got a peaked cap to wear.  8)

*possibly

ETA: just got a text from EE, nee T-Mobile, that forrin calls and texts will be cheaper from June 23! We'll be back in Blighty then!

You may not be driving but after sensibly suggesting we take a spare car key in case we lose the main one you can be Guardian Of The Spare Key and Official Photographer - trekker12 wants to see lots as do we all.

We can benefit from cheaper phone calls when we do the PBP next year.

Enjoy the trip, although I hope the others know what they've let themselves in for.  Will you be wearing that dead reindeer for the alpine ascents? - You will need something to keep you warm on the downhill bits.

D-T-B: Has it occured to you that he will insist on stopping at a French hypermarket on the way back, so you will be expected to spend the last leg of the journey with two crates of cheap french lager and a case of wine on your lap?

Thanks for the good wishes.  We will be keeping a close eye on Del, he is very easy to loose!

We did discuss taking The Musky Reindeer Pelt of Destiny but I think that's a step too far.  The UK's relationship with the EU is perilous enough without such high jinks.

I doubt much booze will be brought back as space is at a premium, plus the car will be pretty heavy as it is.  However I need to keep my Good Lady happy, she would like a bottle or two of Leffe Ruby which we have never managed to source at home.

He'll quickly find that his bike and my panniers will be able to carry that lot home. The wine will numb the pain of cycling from Dover to home.  ;)
A couple of bottles of Leffe Ruby will be okay!  ;)

Spray tans are for the PBP next year.

There are EU regulations about importing le oeufs pickled into France.  If customs in Calais catch you they'll burn your car

Thanks Pingu, really useful stuff.  What was riding along the D1091 to La Grave like?  I've heard it can be quite busy.  Galiber and Telegraphe are on our list but I was wondering about driving the bikes to La Grave and riding from there.

Adamski - my navigational skills are peerless when compared with those of another member of our party!

Wow - en France drinking establishments are known as le pub.  And my experience of French beer is that it's perfectly drinkable but wouldn't qualify for any sort of Good Beer Guide.

Point of order, my navigational skills are 1337! I picked the wrong pub to attend and I got there without difficulty.  ::-)

Got Euro's.

Fatbloke would like this trip as Le Pub's are sure to serve Stella.

I'm sorry to disappoint but I'm not sure there will be many drunken adventures cos (a) the hard drinking members of the mid-Essex yacf chapter aren't coming (identities withheld to protect the guilty) and (b) we'll probably be too knackered and want to go to bed early!

But we will look out for pickled egg substitutes and perhaps bring a few home.

I'd also read that that the D1091 could be quite busy with trucks, but I don't remember there being very much traffic at all (it was a Tuesday when we did it). I think driving to La Grave would be a good plan though as it is a long, slow, not very interesting drag up from Bd'O and it'd leave you more time to go over the Galibier and come back up again.

You'll be needing some long fingered gloves and a newspaper for the downhill bits.

By the way, Stage 14 (Saturday 19th July) of The Tour goes thru Borud-d'Oisans having passed within spitting distance of our campsite a few kilometers up the road.

You don't need to bet, it's a certainty. Last July we encountered 3m of snow at side of road on the Iseran Pass. Admittedly it's one of the higher ones a 2770m.

Yus, we leave from Dover at 0030 on Saturday.  ETA les Alpes mid-afternoon same day.

The only arresting I'm interested in is the arresting Son of Oscar's brakes are going to do (hopefully) as we approach a hair pin bend - of which there will be many

Finished packing, ~17 kilos on the rear rack, just got to squeeze in the Kindle tomorrow so I have something to read as I languish in the car and get fed peeled grapes (or have I dreamt that?  ???).
It could've been a disaster though as I thought I'd finished earlier but then realised that I hadn't put in the cycling clobber!  That could have been embarrassing rolling up Alp d'Huez in my evening suit  8). So the suit is removed  :( to be replaced with cycling shorts and shirts.

I have made the Technical Executive Director decision that ~2 hours of video per day if intelligently selected in the field should be enough, however when reviewing GoPro's spec it appears that an external power source, i.e. my battery power pack, can be used whilst using the camera  (or at least when not recording to top up the battery if 'in use' excludes record mode).

I have often noticed that film production companies have natty names.  We need such a natty name.  I don't think the name needs to reflect this trip as if our cinematic efforts prove successful (and why wouldn't they, what could possibly go wrong?) the Alps film could prove to be the first in a long series.

There are Gremlins at work.  My original post had lots of stuff missing.  Let's start again.

The story so far (Part 1).  Huggy drove us down to Dover and after some waiting around we boarded the ferry:

I shopped in Duty Free:

France appeared in the moonlight:

After 11 uneventful hours we arrived at the site and pitched the tents (see Huggy's time lapse above):

Dinner was cooked and we retired to bed:

Part 2 of the story so far.  Today we went up L' Alpe D'Huez:

After 1144m of climbing (according to my Garmin) we deserved a beer and lunch:

Tomsk's old skool audax credentials are in tatters as he's using a GPS, albeit a borrowed one:

Then we came back down.  I reached 42.8mph, Huggy was slightly faster and fastest of us all.  That said we are being very careful.

Night, night all  :-*

That nearly made me spray my beer over the PC  ;D
Del had sprinted on ahead up Alpe d'Huez after a Chris Froome challenging time.  We think we saw him go back down and do a repeat but we did find him at the top patiently waiting for us.
More photos to follow.....Col l'Ornan and Col d'Solude were conquered today.

Day 2 - Col d'Ornon and Col de Solude ...

Weather bright, sunny and hot.  I found the ride up to Ornon quite tough and worried I wasn't going to cope well with climbing day after day:

After coffee at the top we descended part way and hung a right to climb Solude.  My legs woke up and although the climb was even tougher I started to relax.  The scenery was stunning.  Ravines with streams in the bottom, wild flower meadows, sheep with bells:

Lunch was a long time coming and eventually found in a slightly shabby auberge.  The food and beer hit the spot and the views were mouthwatering:

After lunch a short climb to the summit of Solude:

Oaky would have loved the next bit ... COMEDY OFF-ROADING  :-*

The gravel surface improved to this, the road is cut into the rock face high above the valley floor:

There were unlit tunnels with poor surfaces and water running down from the ceiling, brilliant stuff:

Day 3 - Col du Glandon and Col de la Croix de Fer ...

The weather dawned bright and hot.  It was a long slog up to Glandon with the temperature dropping as we got higher:

We had French lamb curry at the top:

As we ate claps of thunder got closer and it started to rain.  Wet weather gear was donned for the 2.5k climb upto Croix de Fer:

I stopped long enough for a couple of snaps as I wanted to get down sharpish.  Descending from over 2000m in heavyish rain is interesting!  It was also bloody cold.  We learned later that over on Galibier it snowed and cars were being rescued by snow ploughs.

We were prepared and had lights.  Also a van overtook us and waited at the entrance to each tunnel and part way through to light the way!

Day 3 - supposedly an easy day.  Pas de la Confession and l'Alpe d'Huez again ...

Plan A was to ride up to Villard Reculas for coffee, then Confession, then down the l'Alpe road back to Bourg.  But over coffee we decided to ascend to l'Alpe again and do the Sarenne.  It seemed a shame to waste our early start and altitude, plus the weather was nice.

On the way to Confession:

Whilst we ate lunch in the O Bar the weather again worsened so we swept back down the 21 hairpins.  Mega fun, my cornering is improving!

Sorry folks, we were busy packing up last night and are now on the motorway driving home.

Yesterday was our final ride, Lautaret and Galibier.  We drove to La Grave and then biked from there so not such a long ride. My legs took a while to wake up after the previous days exertions.

Some time next week I will post some more photos. I'm sure the rest of the boys will do the same. In the meantime there are loads on Facebook, it's so much easier to post on FB. It we're not already FB buddies feel free to send a request, just search for Steve Rowley. I think there is also a link in my profile.

It has been an amazing experience with three of the best riding chums you could hope to know. My expectations of the trip were high before we left and I was worried I'd be disappointed. As it turned out my expectations were surpassed by a significant margin. It going to be really hard going back to work on Monday.

No objection from me, it's all in the public domain without viewing restrictions :)
You may like to add a health warning to the videos of the faster descents in case anyone is likely to be worried about us.  Note: no cyclists or marmots were harmed in the making of these films!

Hello folks, real life has abated a little so I'm back.  Thanks for all the good wishes regarding my dad.  He has been having chemotherapy since being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.  It was all going well until (we think) the chemo triggered a stroke-like episode which has left him very confused and disoriented with significant speech problems.  We won't know exactly what the future holds until the results of umpteen tests are known.  All very upsetting but anyhow ...

The videos Huggy and Del took are amazing - great job!  I will get round to uploading some of my photos in due course.

I didn't let on but I was quite worried before we set off.  We had a long way to travel, some of the journey overnight, in a very heavily loaded 7-year old car.  What if we crashed, or broke down, or tyres blew out?  I was also worried about how we'd cope with 6 consecutive days of riding in terrain none of us was familiar with.  And would we get on?  Would we crash the bikes or have mechanicals etc, etc, etc?  Thankfully none of my fears turned into reality and I had one of the best weeks of my life.  My only real regret was that I couldn't share it with The Mrs.

The four of us got on famously; when required we worked as a team and chores were done with consummate efficiency - thanks chaps  :-*  We also had no punctures (nor saw any being fixed) or any bike problems although my bottom bracket started to give cause for concern.  The car didn't miss a beat either and Tilly the Trailer followed behind dutifully even at high speed.

The scenery was breathtaking - much better than I remember.  On balance I liked the smaller cols (Solude, Sarenne and Pas de la Confession) better than the iconic TdF climbs.  The roads were quieter and the views more intimate.

The second day was my favourite.  The climb up to Ornon was a bit of a slog as my legs took awhile to warm up but lunch was excellent.  The descent from Solude down the unmade road then the tunnels was great fun.  The views across the valley to Alpe d' Huez were superb.

The most fun segment was our second descent of Alpe d' Huez when we had the Go Pro on the back of Huggy's bike and I am doing all I can to stick close to him and stay in shot - it was like trying to formation fly!

I was also seriously impressed with my bike - a humble Ribble blue horizontal top tube winter / audax machine.  I bought the frame and carbon forks for £150 (new) in 2009.  It doesn't have disc brakes, just Tektro R538 dual pivot calipers.  I was using 23c Schwalbe Durano Plus tyres.  The whole rig was sure footed with buckets of braking power even braking hard from speeds in excess of 40mph (my max was 44.7mph).  The only time I would have liked discs was when we descended Glandon in the wet.

I'd recommend our campsite too. (http://www.camping-le-chateau.co.uk/)  They have very nice looking static caravans if you don't fancy camping - two had hot tubs!

More words and pictures when time allows.

Which month of 2023 are you thinking? And for how long?

I'm planning a Scottish tour at the moment, but of course, there's no reason I can't have more than one summer tour  :)

So historically we have gone for mid-June which is before the school holidays and after the snow has gone from the high altitudes although we have encountered roadside snow on Galiber.  In both 2014 and 2017 we drove down overnight on Friday, got to Le Bourg-d'Oisans early afternoon Saturday then drove home the following Saturday getting back to The People's Republic of Mid-Essex late Saturday evening.  This means we have 6 full days hurling ourselves up big hills

For those of you reading this who might be unfamiliar with the Alps a little about Le Bourg-d'Oisans.  Twice now we have based ourselves in or near the town which sits at the foot of the legendary l'Alpe d'Huez and its 21 hairpin bends.  The only time we used a car to get us to the start of a day's ride was in 2014 when we drove closer to Galiber, the rest of the time we rode out from our accommodation each day.

Of course there are dozens of locations from which to base yourself but for me Le Bourg-d'Oisans ticks all the boxes.  There are at least 3 routes up l'Alpe d'Huez, each of which allows you to descend the 21 hairpins.  But there are other superb routes as well, the best in the Tunnel Ride on the opposite side of the valley to l'Alpe d'Huez. If you have 13 minutes to spare WATCH (https://youtu.be/GgY9qV_ZOk4) this video shot by me and Fred.

Depending on timings, I'd be up for a trip to the Alps.

Me too, possibly instead of going to the Alps if it is going to be even harder to cross into Europe with the upcoming border protocol changes.

I am looking at routes with plenty of forestry tracks, cycle paths and pubs.  Camping most nights but mainly eating out.

I also fancy a trip to Flanders for beer and bergs and spending a bit more time in the Ardennes/Eifel region (but see comments above).

The Alps sets a good target for fitness though.

All have potential... might invest in a new tent - one thats easier to get out of would be good LOL

Was climbing in the Alps, June/July.  It's the first time I have ever had my front wheel literally blown across the road - when I rounded a corner.  Luckily there was some road left when it returned to earth.   Alpine climbing is a very good way to get fitter if you survive.

Hello Alps People,

I had an email from THESE FOLKS (https://morethan21bends.com/self-catered-accommodation-in-bourg-doisans), you'll see they have two apartments in Bourg d’Oisans.  I have been in touch and four bed apartment is is 900Euros and the two bedder is 500Euros.  There's an optional cleaning fee of 60Euros for big apartment and 30Euros for small one.  Towel rental is 7Euros per person, bedding is included in price.  There's also a refundable security deposit to cover any damage.

I have no idea whether this is cheap or expensive but it looks nice.

The dates I have given is Saturday 10th to Saturday 17th, we'd set off on the evening of Friday 9th and drive down overnight as we've done before.

What do people think?  Is anyone willing to make a commitment now which would enable us to book one of both apartments?

Hello,

During Epiphany I was asking around about the Alps.  5 people were prepared to commit so we could get some accommodation booked.  Those 5 are:

1. Me
2. huggy
3. jibers
4. Elliot
5. Raymond

Various other people expressed tentative interest.

I have made enquires and the accommodation linked to above is still available at a total cost of 1532Euro including cleaning and towels.  With 5 sharing the cost it'll be 307Euro each, with 6 sharing its 255Euro each.

If we go with the above accommodation we can fit another person in, does anyone want to commit now?

Ideally I would like to get the accommodation booked this week, so will need deposit money off folks.

Once accommodation is sorted the next step will be to decide how we get there.  5 or 6 people will mean two cars if we go with our usual format.

I've booked the week off at work...

Think I'd prefer a room to myself but lets see how it pans out.  Remember - no fish, mushrooms or cucumber please

I don't see a problem with people saying what they do or don't want, might put the cost up or perhaps just for them so let's see what others come up with.

BTW, there's a {url=https://www.camping-lecolporteur.com/fr]campsite[/url] in Bourg d'Oisans which does cabins so there's another option.  Some people in tents, others in cabins etc

In fact, come to think of it, I like the idea of the campsite.  Its close to the centre of town and opposite a Casino supermarket if I recall.

There are a number of accommodation options which folks can book themselves, you could have accommodation all to yourself or share with someone else.  Could also be easy for people joining the trip later, even last minute.

Make sure you ride the Col du Solude up through Villard-Notre-Dame.  There is a little bit of gravel at the top, but nothing to travel a road bike, and you descend to the Col d'Ornon road.  Most spectacular piece of road I've ridden on.  You will need a little front light for one of the tunnels as they are unlit (but not long).

Looks cheaper than the ABNB option too. 380euro for a 3 bed palace (static caravan with wooden facelift + AC + TV) as a 7 night booking yields a 25% disco !

"Last time a I spent a week in Bd'O, I took the M-bike with camping gear and stayed at the Camping La Piscine across the river at the foot of Alp d'Huez. Just hired a road bike at Bleach Bike & Ski Hire shop opposite the Tourism Office on a daily basis during Mid September. Just ate out every time".

I think most of the campsites have a small communal building with seating areas for meeting up etc

I have never used self catering - so to me I didn't see many major advantages apart from a comfy bed to sleep in.

Either way I'm happy to take the camping, cabin or ABNB option.
