Could be quite effective, but possibly not something you'd want on the bike...

I've read (on here I expect) that welding rod makes for a fine flagpole, they'll know they've hit it then  :demon:

Garden fork carried cross-wise on the rack should do the trick.

I recently had reason to transport a cardboard tube of rolled up sheet material on the bike.

In the absence of a better way to attach it, I passed it through the handles of the Altura panniers horizontally and secured it to the rack with a toestrap.  Predictably this obtained recumbent tricycle amounts of room from overtakers.

Then, the bollards came...
