I found out today why they can't convert it to biofuels. Just logistics - lack of capacity to get enough fuel to the station. Biomass takes up a lot more space than coal :(

Noticed the completely 'inactive' cooling towers this afternoon; a strange sight.

Thought I'd post this variant (from last yr) in homage...

I did a tour of the cooling towers yesterday, due to a byway that I normally use to get to Wittenham clumps being completely flooded.  Very strange seeing them without a big plume of water vapour coming out of the top.

I also had a sort-of girlfriend from Godalming (a long time ago, before I met Mrs Nerd).  If only she was from Didcot instead.

I am obliged to Swindon's Jack FM for this one.

 :o

Well I was in Fleet on Saturday (visiting my mum and her sister), and trust me, it wasn't remotely sexy!  Fleet was full of assorted chavvy types bumbling in and out of McD's and the pound shops...  and its nowhere near Didcot...

This very morning, a citizen of Didcot was spotted 'abroad',  traversing the car park of Abingdon Waitrose.  A fleeting glimpse gave me the impression of a wirey, bearded,  bespectacled fellow combining the hollow stare of an Audaxer with a warm whiff of humanity.  He was serene in motion and unafraid as he glided by, completely unaware of the fat bastard in the 7 seater .....

 ;D

I can safely report from my ride home from Oxford this evening that there was definitely no steam coming out the cooling towers....end of an era ::-)
DJR (Dave Russell) now retired. Carbon Beone parts bin special retired to turbo trainer, Brompton broken, as was I, Whyte Suffolk dismantled and sold. Now have Mason Definition and Orbea M20i.

Are you sure it wasn't the warm whiff of digested Ginster's?

That's a bit harsh, I don't know whether he entered the store or was using the car-park to avoid having to use the parallel cycle path ....

Whereas I, (the aformentioned fat bastard in the people carrier) was delivering daughter #2 for her Waitrose shift .... but then we are so 'Established Middle Class'.

Oh dear, there could be an embarassing story here. Perhaps not for telling online ...

A Partnership company.

They could do a lot worse.

Agreed ... we'll be expecting son #1 to work there too.  We need the discount!

One schleps out to Marlborough, of course.

That's not a proper fully grown pimped up Waitrose in Menai Bridge ;D

I was born in Didcot, was working class and used to go to the cinema in Marlborough before it became a Waitrose :smug:

You have me there, Sir!

I was born in Wakefield (hence my forum name) and brought up in a pit village. The site of my first school became a branch of Kwiksave. It's now occupied by Asda.

Actually neither does Oxford... guess JLP thought Abingdon would suffice around here.     :)

Headington has had a Waitrose for about 4 years, so that map is well out of date!
They're also interested in turning the old MFI / Halfords retail unit on Botley Road into one (according to the Oxford Mail).
We don't shop in Waitrose, even though we can afford to.  We slum it with everyone else in the Abingdon Tesco. :)
