Which is why they should keep Stanford open. Of course I may have a vested interest....

When I lived in London they closed our local centre which just resulted in an increase in fly tipping as the main centre was right on the far edge of the borough

It read as "Storm Barney: Tree crashes on Didcot" on my iPad.

I only noticed the houses later...

So, pronunciation wise which is preferred:  Didcott, or Didcutt, or even Didcoe?   :)

BBC are reporting one dead, five in hospital, three unaccounted for. Presumably all demolition contractors rather than station staff from the gas plant side. Some reports are suggesting that it was a collapse rather than an explosion, not that it makes much difference right now I guess.

Asbestos?

Seems very odd otherwise - we havent seen a dot of dust, and the view of Jupiter and the moon is crystal-clear right now. (although we're nowhere near down-wind tonight., For a change ... )

(N's shuttle-bus snuck past the site no more than 10mins before the collapse.)

Possibly asbestos, but that is not a dose-response relationship, rather a dose-probability in epidemiological terms.

Probably plenty of other nastys from an old power station as well.

Shouldn't be these days, should all have been removed pre demo, poss ground contam, but that's not relevant here.

If the demo had been planned then yes, but as this was unplanned then they may not have finished removing all the nasty stuff yet

Went up the nearest hill around 9pm; quite a sobering sight.

Fair amount of dust cloud visible, lit by full moon + emergency lighting (I guess?). possibly more sinister than seen in daylight.

reminded me of the 9/11 footage :(

(p.s. demo = demonstration to Joe Layman. But its not important either way ... )

I can't speak for what they HAVE done, but from what I've read this has been ongoing for a couple of years.  In my experience of decomissioning elsewhere the removal of nastys in terms of PCBs, other fluids etc is early in the sequence - decomissioning - decontamination - demolition.

Apart from asbestos at that age, and possible PCBs in transformers, that industry doesn't use a lot of nastys.

According to the BBC the Fire Service are saying that there were no hazardous materials on site.

Otherwise all normal at Didcot, my train about a quarter of an hour late...

One the local residents was saying that prior to planned demolition explosions, they've been warned to stay indoors and close all windows.  Some of the treatment of those affected by the collapse appears to relate to dust inhalation, presumably simply because of the quantity of dust involved, rather than its constituents.

What the aerial photographs of the remaining building shows, is that it appears to be fairly solidly stuffed full of equipment.  More a large integrated engineering installation, than the box full of equipment that most of us often think of, when the term building is used.
Actually, it is rocket science.

Landfill? Tow 'em out to sea to feed fish, etc.! It's what happens to whales when they die at sea, as most do. It's natural & ecologically sound.
