When did stollen become common in the UK ?
« on: 10 December, 2011, 07:37:22 pm »
I cant remember ever seeing any as a kid but now it's everywhere this time of year. Not complaining as its cake so obviously a good thing just slightly bemused. Some time in the last twenty years its gone from a rare German import you might see in a posh deli to available in every supermarket and bakery in the land.  I don't remember a big advertising campaign or anything suddenly it's just ubiquitous.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

Dunno, but these things happen. Happened with baguette, for instance. Now brace for the kugelhopf, I reckon that's gonna be the next one!

I'd say early-90s when Aldi and Lidl made serious inroads in the UK[1]. The supermarkets started their 'German Christmas Market' i bit earlier than that though, and some of those included stollen. Panettone seems to have become far more ubiquitous in the last few years as well.

[1] Aldi's first UK shop opened in 1989 according to wikipedia

PS: When looking into the two companies there was some interesting stuff about Aldi and Lidl's policies on union membership and treatment of staff.

The Dutch Stroopwafel will be the next ubiquitous European food item.

I'm pretty sure I saw them on the shelves in Aldi a couple weeks ago.

I don't think the cone pizza has reached the UK yet. That was big on the continent a couple of years ago.

It's taken decades for stollen, pannetone, and stroopwafels to reach the UK, so cone pizza should reach the UK in 2040?
