Title: The Brown Chain thread
Post by: Bledlow on 17 April, 2013, 10:54:05 am
I'll start. All on the same set of Sheffield stands in the middle of Reading, yesterday. Phone pictures, so maybe not of the usual standard.

Ooh - some nice examples there.

Bonus points should be awarded for photos of brown chains in action (with associated audio recording for even more points).

I am amazed when I see (and hear) some of the chains out there that they actually move.

What I like about those pictures is how smart/new/clean the bikes look. Well apart from the chains, that is ...

Indeed. That's what inspired me. Apart from the rusty transmissions & in some cases unshipped chains, all these bikes look perfectly roadworthy, down to having air in their tyres. Definitely not suitable for the dead BSO thread, so I thought they should have their own.

Some of my customers think that's how they should look . . .

My commuter is pretty much a continuous rope of black with chunks.

Never ceases to amaze me just how quickly this happens to bikes left outside even under cover.

Oh, right.  I thought that this thread may have been about lavatory disasters.  :o

Brown and very slack. Also sporting ridiculously narrow bars (no space for brake levers, but that's ok - no brakes ::-)).

That's a work of art.

I'm off to Amsterdam next weekend. I expect to see some spectacular examples there.

The one I posted above was spotted in Roskilde. I suspect it may have been in the fjord for some time!

This one was found last summer in our garden, when we decided it was a good time to rebuild a very old stone and concrete staircase.

We ended up with a chainset, a chain, and only one pedal of what was probably a child's bike. Fortunately, no remnant of the young rider followed!

This is a bit shameful, because it's one of my own bikes. What happens when you keep your hack bike outside in the winter :-[:

One owner from new, low mileage yardage.
Then left in the garage for 20 years.

Me: "It's mud!"
Fboab: "No it's not, it's rust!"
Me: "How can it be rust, it wasn't like that when we set out!"
Fboab: "The wet has flushed it out."

Either way - it needs attention!
