I looked at Steve's progress at 6:40 this morning.  He'd already done more miles than I will today.
At some point on Sunday he will pass my annual target for this year.
Admission.  I'm actually not that fussed about cake.

At least it's not blowing a gale out there so far this morning.
You're only as successful as your last 1200...

Yes winds are much down but there`s an ice risk now as it clears---and next few days will be very cold. Take care out there Steve
....after the `tarte de pommes`, and  fortified by a couple of shots of limoncellos,  I flew up the Col de Bavella whilst thunderstorms rolled around the peaks above

this  week                  latest ride     av speed       climb
Kurt Searvogel         1,218.7 km   4   309.4 km     29.6 km/h   2,354 m
Steven Abraham    1,145.4 km   4   306.0 km   22.5 km/h   6,454 m

very interesting - it is hare and tortoise - but the hare is stopping after just a few  kms more than the tortoise each day.

Mind you he does have it much easier -- warmer and very much flatter.

That's what Steve said would happen on his Channel 4 interview on NYE. It will be very interesting once Steve has got through the winter and the playing-field is levelled rather.

Kurt is using Steve as a pacemaker at this stage.

Today will be very interesting as Kurt's first 'recovery' day. Will he stick to his planned 85 miles...

Kurt is using Steve as a pacemaker at this stage.

... which may be his biggest advantage in the short term. Although it is worth remembering that both have used Godwin's record as a pacemaker. I wonder what is was like in 1939 when Godwin and Bennett, who set off on the same date, were presumably using weekly mileage publications in Cycling magazine to assess each others' progress.

Has Steve not a got a set of wheels with studded tyres for the ice, such as Marathon Winters?

You definitely do not want to attempt 300km on studded tyres. Gritted A-roads are a much more achievable approach.

Steve is just about to go through Manea the village of my birth. People from Manea and known as Maneacks. So watch out the next time we meet on the road. :demon:

He could have it worse: his north-eastern route stops just a few km short of the village where I spent my formative months.  I'll let y'all guess which one it is: it's the one where the locals look decidedly funny  ;)

As you are a god bit younger than me our life paths may have crossed earlier.
We lived in Wimblington from 1984 to 1989.
I can recall doing a short ride towards Benwick when the wind was so strong that even in my lowest gear, I was struggling to make headway. I hope TG has got the wind in his favour.
I have also skated on the fen ice at Welney, which to me should be everyones bucket list.
I found the majority of the fen folk good company ,even if one or two were a bit strange.

I thought people were joking when they were suggesting a CDC.  There is definite ball sacks and shaft rising proudly into the North East.  Filthy boy.

Sometimes when I check Steve's progress it gives a current speed of 1 mph or less.  That's fine, it means he's stopped and eating.  However he is currently showing 2½ mph.  That's more worrying.  That's pushing the bike speed.  :-\

Eta, OK down to 0 now, so probably a food stop.  (Previously pushing the bike to park it?)

I had assumed that the speed shown was the average between the last two points. In fact, I can't see how it can be anything else. If Steve spent 1 minute approaching a food stop at 15 mph and then 4 minutes at the food stop, and at either end of that 5 minutes spell there was a track-point, I would imagine that would show a speed of 3 mph (0.25 of a mile in 5 minutes).

That makes sense.  I should have realised that's how it worked.
So no need to worry unless he gives 3 walking speeds in a row.

All the signs are that it is going to be a heavy frost tonight probably with black ice. Gritters were out early. I have just been out in the car for the first time today and it was iced up internally.
