Anyone Know of a Used Trike?
« on: 13 December, 2008, 12:42:03 am »
As a sometime recumbent bodger developer and test pilot I haven't had much to play on recently, mainly cos my mate buggered off to Frog and took his welder with him.

I've got the plans tumbling thru' the old grey matter for a powered trike using a 7 ratio Nexus hub and a Volvo fan motor (1/2 horse or thereabouts). It occurs that it is probably beyond my 'garden shed' level tecnology to reliably build a tadpole front end and so something very second hand could be suitably modified.

Has anyone got anything? I can build wheels, change bearings and do all the 'cycle' related stuff quite well. I don't mind rebuilding seats and it can be as rusty or scratched as you like. The only real stipulation is the back end is standard cos its going to be a hub gear. Apart from that anything goes.

Not fussed where it's from as long as it hasn't got half a bolloxed U-lock hanging off it or the lamp post still attached! And half removed DataTags can be a right PITA to get off.

I built a delta trike years ago using a Mini starter motor to drive one of the rear wheels.  ::-)

We started off with a Sturmey 3 speed hub (with emery cloth glued to the shell) friction driving the rear wheel.

We then changed to driving a 3 speed built into the wheel. I think we usede a 7 tooth cog on the motor and a 42 tooth at the wheel  :o - it was a BMX chainring welded onto a Sturmey sprocket!

It worked for limited periods, but the motor got hot very quickly.

We welded the frame up on ours, but I had (and may still have) plans to build one based on a sheet of plywood, with only one little welding/brazing job neccesary at the front end.

Does the fan motor have it's own cooling fan?
If it ain't broke, fix it 'til it is...

I know next to nowt about the degree of tech abilty required, but I noticed this on th'bay a few days ago - would it serve as the "basics"?

Unfortunately while it's a marvel of Moultonesque triangulation, it has a Windcheetery mono rear hub, which doesn't lend itself immediately to hub gears.  Of course, building a new dual swing arm is probably not beyond the MIG talents of Mr Torslanda.

You might want to slaver at my used Trice QNT in the sales section. I also have two Sturmey Archer brake hubs one built into a 20" wheel and a front boom from a Trice QNT if your interested, all in mint condition.

Oh Yeah! I can slaver. Believe me if I had that kind of money we wouldn't be talking homebuilt.

Not like you did!

Who else, besides Nutty and Redshift has turned a 'Cheetah over?

Style marks for Redders 5.9 5.8 5.9 5.9 6.0

Wasn't there but it was spectacular. She tried to go around a car that pulled out on her. She was travelling at nearly 40mph - allegedly - and turned a 'split-S' turn into a 'rolling reversal' but spun out before she could go to guns on him!  ;D

Flat spin. Crashed & burned. Wasn't pretty.

Moton nearly had a coronary . . .

I think it was Tom Riley who flipped one when he was trying to catch me at one of the Company of Cyclist's roadshows.

I was riding a Greenspeed which is wider and handles so well that you can wave a wheel in the air whilst sliding it round a corner  :o

By the way, there's a couple on sale on the CTC forum - a Windcheetah (Ok, so the hub gear may be a problem) and a Greenspeed - both £850.

Me.  Twice  Three times.

Once attempting a J-turn down a car park ramp.
Once avoiding a car pulling out in front of me when coming off Richmond Bridge at R17.
Once when changing down on the hill outside Holloway prison - the chain climbed over the block and into the spokes :'(

I escaped the latter with minor bruising and a sprained dignity - the latter mostly due to the markedly unsympathetic aspect of TWFKAML when I got home, viz. "Did you damage your jersey?"  New husbands, it would seem, can be acquired free from various charitable organisations, but cycling apparel costs Money.
