On the Spot tracker map, it would be good to have an option to display only today's track, and toggle the whole year to date's worth of tracks on/off...  When the tracker points get more spaced later in the day, it's sometimes pretty difficult to see the current track... (IMO)

Go Steve!
You can see the 'today only' track at http://audaxclubhackney.co.uk/tg.html or on the excellent Android app.

Well done Steve.  And thanks for all the recipe ideas, for when Teethgrinder is booked to stay at CET Towers later in the year.  Although I think I might go for the risotto I did at Barnard Castle for LEL - with lots of chicken, pork and rice - if I do a batch for 10 riders it should be enough for TG?

Personally I don't think Wilkyboy (or any host) should bother Steve with anything other than refuelling, sleep and getting him back on the road the next morning.

Questions like "so, what went wrong yesterday then?" should be the last thing on a host's mind.

Quite so — I did ask how he was feeling, but not anything more enquiring than that.

Steve is extraordinarily tired: his entire desire when he arrived was to go to bed.  He did the Strava thing because he had to, and he ate some chicken while that was happening (from main#2).  We chatted for about 15 seconds about how hard double-centuries are (I did my first of the season a few weeks back on a ride with Steve himself), how you can't live on caffeine for extended periods, how it'll be so much nicer to ride in the spring, how he felt about having crowds following his every move, and how the Budget would affect us each personally ... actually, we might not have discussed the budget.  But over it all, Steve just wanted to go to bed: I took him up to his garret within about 25 minutes of his arrival.

The only socialising we did was a quick chuckle over how quickly the first comment popped up on Strava after he uploaded his track — it took just seconds, get a life people  ;D

Steve offered — I did NOT ask — an answer to yesterday's question, though.  It was simple: he needed to sleep.  He stopped early so he could go to bed.  Today he was in bed well before 10pm and his alarm is set for 4am (mine's set for slightly before that)

Steve also mentioned that he did recognise you Wobbly John

The catering went to plan: everything was cooked by the time he arrived, I thought it tasted delicious, and Steve ate what he felt like eating.  There is perhaps something to learn, though, in that he didn't want the jacket potatoes, nor the big Spanish-chicken dish I cooked, nor any bread, or any cake, or anything else.  Just some finger-lickin' chickin while doing the Strava thing, and three lots of protein recovery drink.  His point was that he'd been eating constantly all day and wasn't hungry in the evening.  Just tired.

He's taking the rest of the chicken thighs and a cold jacket potato as a picnic, along with a whole granola cake and half a fruit cake (although we'll see whether it'll all fit in his bag in the morning), as it's just much more efficient use of his time during the day.  The remaining food will keep for the boys' dinner tomorrow (and probably Saturday — I may have over-catered  ::-)).

I've made a note to mention the eclipse to Steve.  His batteries and GPSes are charging, his bottles are Nuun'ed, and his bike's pointing in the right direction.  Nothing much else to do apart from wait for 4am to roll around.
Lockdown lethargy. RRTY: wot's that? Can't remember if I'm on #8 or #9 ...

Well done, Wilky. We did chat about this last week in York, and his current plan seems to be to have high tea somewhere on the road, then arrive at destination and go to bed.

I'll bet he's more animated in the morning ;D

That's one of the few dishes I remember from LEL.

In a good way.

Well done Nick and thanks for the informative post.

Yeah, and how tired must he be.
All that food you'd prepared, sounded lovely, and he was too full and too tired to eat it. That tells you how far he's pushing himself already.
Boy this is one hell of a challenge.
Tomorrow's another day.

I've no idea how connected Steve is to real world events while he is doing the OYTT, but Wilkyboy may wish to mention to him that should the clouds clear tomorrow morning, he can expect a rather stunning (80% or so) solar eclipse between 8 and 10 am.

I don't think it will be "stunning", I suspect that unless you knew it was happening you may not notice it at all, a bit darker and cooler than it should be but even that is not a sudden change. I remember the 1999 total which I saw near Rheims, that was exciting seeing the shadow of totality race across the fields towards us and then the diamond ring immediately before totality.

PS another great day, well done Steve!

Unlikely he'll notice anything. 85% is not enough to make the daylight dramatically dim and there's no way you can look at the Sun directly to see it without eclipse glasses. It takes over an hour to go from 0% to 85% obscured during which your eyes will adjust. The daylight only really dramatically changes in the few minutes before totality (~ >98% obscured). I've seen and photographed several partial eclipses and saw totality in 1999. During a 67% partial I observed (i.e. what the Sun will be at about 9am tomorrow) absolutely nothing was different whatsoever.

I noticed a significant difference in the amount of light in 1999. We were in Scarborough so quite some way from the totality. Not so far as the Faeroes though.

Scarborough will actually be pretty similar tomorrow as it was in 1999 (about 90%). The Sun was a lot higher in the sky in 99 though.

Most of southern England is around the 85% mark. If you're looking out for it and following it you might notice it. Anyone else won't even know it's happened :)

Steve's strategy of not eating a huge meal in the evening actually resonates with me.  I've often found that if I get in late on the first day of a 600 I'd rather sleep first and eat when I get up.  I did that on the Bryan Chapman once and found myself in the gap between the dinner service and the breakfast service so stemmed my hunger with double spotted dick and custard, which was all that was available.
