Just bit the side of my mouth and given myself a mahoosive blood blister.  The only thing to hand with a point sharp enough to burst it is my BFO camping knife . Nothing can go wrong . Right ?

After driving 600kms yesterday afternoon to visit family and check on our house VeloYellow has been called back to work tomorrow so we drove back this evening. 14 hours on the road for what ended up as 9 waking hours there. Still, we did check the house and sheep, catch up with MIL, daughter, neighbours and chap who's fitting the new gate, shop, collect winter clothes and VY got out on the bike.

What is it with Natioanl rail?

Mallaig to Whitehaven in June costs £103 direct! Using the same trains but on separate tickets to and from Glasgow it costs £25.60. The only difference is not getting the transfer bus from Queen St to Central - that's one expensive bus!

Glasgow taxis are cheap & good IME. Bet you can do that transfer for less than £75 (or £7.50)!

As I'll have a bike with me (and full camping kit) I think I'll just ride between the two, it only takes about ten minutes :)

You wouldn't get it on a bus then anyway, would you?

No, it's just the 'free bus' comes included on a ticket through Glasgow and is the only difference between my £26 split fare and the £103 single ticket that I'm grumbling about. Why do you have to go through the extra hassle of splitting up the tickets to get a sensible fare?

I went to the station on Thursday to book my ticket to Winchester at the end of May, and bless him, the chap behind the counter actually checked for me whether I could travel cheaper on split fares. Alas, I couldn't, but I thought it was nice of him to bother!

Cycle 50 miles, and I feel a bit tired.  Walk 2km and I've got sore feet, an unstable knee and am utterly shattered.  That's rubbish.

Reckon legs would be better if they could freewheel downhill.  Maybe I should give up walking under the 'no fixies' rule?

I thought I'd got past my apparently-obligatory annual springtime spluttering season a bit early this year.  But evidently not...

Just got a request to review a paper for a journal.

Replies 'is this paper open access? If not, no.'

I don't get paid to review scientific papers. It comes as part of the territory and is an evenings and weekends activity. I'll see some publisher rot in hades before I will any longer donate my time to their profits when they then charge people subscriptions to view that paper.  So now I do not review anything that is not open access (and don't submit to anything that is not open access either.)

Knees hurting :-( stoopid dog emptier didn't see any need to control his pooch near the road and it ran into my front wheel. I managed to save it but over extended my leg doing so.  It's the knee I've had a lot of trouble with previously but it had settled down recently .. Bollocks!

Weather - just sort yourself out, eh?

If I want to experience myriad different types of weather within an unfeasibly short timescale then I'll move to Scotland.

Basil:  You have missed BOTH rides this w/e due to the Black Dog feeling grumpy.
You've only gone for 3000 miles on my cycling logs, and you're falling behind already.
Sort yourself out!

Suspiciously good.  Maybe I should grind up hills in hailstorms more often...

Because British rail ticket pricing is done by evil gnomes who take a sadistic delight in torturing travellers.

Last year Mrs B & I saved a lot more than the cost of a Network Railcard on using one for tickets to Banbury, & buying separate tickets from Banbury to Birmingham. The ticket inspector was obviously used to it.
