I remember watching a film set in WWII with very little dialogue.  It was about an American and a Japanese soldier stuck in the jungle (on an island?) and the measures they took.

I can't remember the title, and I may be being anachronistic, or reading too much into it, but I thought it was an allegory about the futility of the Vietnam war.

Can anyone identify it from my very poor memory? :-[

Frank Sinatra in the lead?

The film you're thinking of with Sinatra is None But the Brave (1965), also directed by him, and starring Clint Walker ("Posey" in The Dirty Dozen, which has Lee Marvin in it, who was in Hell in the Pacific).

Another favourite not mentioned so far is "The Train" (1964), directed by John Frankenheimer, starring Burt Lancaster, Paul Scofield, and Jeanne Moreau.

As is the way with these things, pretty much all of the good 'uns have been mentioned already.

'Stalingrad'  hasn't had a mention though.  A brilliant film in its way  but very moving and ultimately, depressing.  It certainly puts facing another yet Monday morning into perspective.

One of the few films that shows a friendly fire incident in close combat but which doesn't belabour it.

This one addresses the age old link between taxation and war.

I seem to remember a rather good one with Bugs Bunny.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

After a recent bit of inspiration I watched Ken Loach's Land and Freedom again (again).

The scene at the end where they cut to the present day between funerals has the same power for me as the 'Play the Marsellaise' scene in Casablanca*, the final ride of Arthur's knights in Excalibur and randomly (because as time passes you are unlikely to ever see it again on TV) the later scenes in the now rarely seen low budget Scottish drama 'Restless Natives'.

*I stand up at this point in the film.  I'm not popular during cinema screenings.

Edit:  Explaining my personal views on why Casablanca is fabulous is an entire other thread.

Hell in the Pacific (a bit of a classic really in a period piece sort of way).

See also: Enemy Mine (not as bad as it sounds; a good effort, I thought).

I love Enemy Mine.
