It takes blood and guts to be this cool but I'm still just a cliché.

The theme to University Challenge

That's a cheery one :)

Or "Time flies by when you're the driver of a train"

Half man version, of course

At last, someone else who remembers the brilliant HMHB  :D

The The's Heartland ?

Although that's possibly a bit too depressing to sing on the Olympic Podium ;)

THIS IS THE 51st STATE OF THE U.S.A

so true though...

How about "Breadline Britain" by The Communards ?

By the time we've paid for 2012 it's where we'll be...

What about the theme tune from "I'm sorry I haven't a clue"? That would certainly confuse the opposition.

Would our German friends complain their natioal anthem had been defiled?

When I helped to run the Mind Sports Olympiad, no matter what the nationality, "Fanfare for the Common Man" was played. I quite like that.

Choose something you don't like, because being turned into an anthem will destroy it.

I don't particularly like "FFTCM", but I do like the idea of playing the same thing for everyone.

I don't know the name of it, but that music they play as the circus people come into the ring.

Achilles' Last Stand?

I once saw the Argentinian Olympic team march into a stadium to the same march used at the Monty Python theme.

Or "Asteroid" (the Pearl and Dean theme).  Not many lyrics, though.

Someone once did a mashup of that and Whole Lotta Love IIRC.  That worked rather well.

No, it's okay. I have a recording of the original and it still works, despite ELP's worst efforts.

Aka John Philip Sousa's Liberty Bell. We used to play it in the school wind band (I was second trumpet) and it always went down very well.

Another staple of our repertoire was Gaudeamus Igitur, which would also make a great national anthem.

That's already the unoffical German national anthem ;D  Somewhere I have a picture of Team GB coach Jan van Eijden doing just this, clicky.

National anfems need to be short and to the point.  Hence Half Man Half Biscuit's "Petty Sessions" fits the bill perfectly.

Wunderbar by Tenpole Tudor.  Ooh, hang on.... Make that Swords of a Thousand Men

Or how about The National Anthem by Radiohead - it doesn't even need a new name.  It'd have to be the album version with Humphrey Littleton and his orchestra doing the full brass bit.

I can think of 3, all by the same UK band, that would fit nicely.

1) Everything Sucks
2) Un-UK
3) As Seen on TV

Since Microsoft is probably the only think that "unites" us then American English by Idlewild seems ironically appropriate.
