Title: Strange desserts
Post by: geraldc on 24 April, 2010, 12:20:02 pm
Went to a Lebanese restaurant last night. They had Mastic ice cream. I'd only come across Mastic as a bathroom sealant. Turns out is some kind of plant gum. Tasted ok, but would have preferred vanilla. It didn't have egg in it, so was a bit like a creamy mini milk ice lolly in ice cream form.
Still it's not everyday you get to eat plumbing supplies. When I was young I had a school friend who ate linseed putty from windows, but I think he was a bit strange anyway.

We've had several 'arabic-influenced' deserts which fall into this category.

Lemon 'posset' with green pepper.
Spiced pears in red wine where the spicing was bay leaves and black pepper.

Not had mastic (although I think I have a recipe using it somewhere).
