Just had a bit of a mad thought. I'm planning to tour between Newcastle(ish) and Aberdeen in the middle of March.

If the baton is still in the North East then (and one of the residents of Furry Boots Toon was willing to take it at the end), it may be possible for me to transport our wooden friend quite a long way north.

Hmm

But please not in a one-er ...

I only just worked out what you meant by one-er.

I was thinkin 'onesie'.

But you mean one single long trip, don't you

Yup.  Just 'cos it'd be nice to show the baton the sights before everything gets stowed out for the Festival  ;)

I'm riding up to Berwick this weekend.

Anyone in the borders fancy a hands-across-the-divide-stylee handover of le baton?

I won't carry it just on the off-chance, as I'll probably be train-assisted on the way back to Darlo.

Time for the baton to get some decent history. Standing stones, Scott's ship. Pictish runes etc. And with a bit of wrangling, the snow roads.

It also traveled through the Netherton Tunnel (of the famous Tunnel Ride) on my leg to Brum.

I had to put the cover over this morning or you and the rest of the pannier would have been soaked. Other than that you've been travelling al-fresco. Hope you've enjoyed the Coast and Castles so far :)

I'm currently sat in Edinburgh (avec le Baton)

What happens if the Scots vote for independence when the baton is still up there? Will it be a bit like the Elgin Marbles or the Scone of Stoon? Forever to be internationally haggled over?

I suspect the SAS will be sent in to get it. Who dares wins.

I do hope that Le Baton will continue his travels even if he gets to John O'Groats so soon.
Getting there...

There will have to be another challenge. I believe he hasn't yet visited the Emerald Isle.

SAS is already in Scotland and a potential recipient of the baton.

And the Baton brings typically seasonal weather to Dundee. Received from mcshroom on a blustery and rather soggy day before leading him to his abode for the night.

Many moons ago, when Discovery was moored on the Thames and I was a Sea Sprout I spent a weekend aboard.  There was a competition to see which Sprout could collect the most newspapers which were then sold to a recycling company to raise funds.  I was well placed in the competition so won a place on the Discovery weekend.

One of the activities was rowing navy whalers down to Greenwich.  I was so weedy I couldn't manage the weight of the oars so spent the trip sat in the bows on a coil of rope.
