Later With Jools
« on: 08 August, 2009, 10:55:19 pm »
Last week I caught a bit of Jools and I am trying to find the details of the show to find out who one of the bands were.

It was some band from sweden or similar with female lead singer, the details are not on the Beeb yet as it has not been updated for a few weeks.

Answers on a postcard or via the forum - which would be much quicker.

Last night's show re-affirmed why I love the show so much.

Rumer - What a voice !,

John Grant - What a voice !

Both artists completely new to me but I'll be checking them out on Spotify for sure

Scissor Sisters - What a performance !

Can't say I like Brandon Flowers but it was a good performance for those who do.

Nick Cave was also pretty good

I am now listening to John Grant's album, "Queen of Denmark", on Spotify

Another amazing debut this week, Jessie J singing "Price Tag".

Absolutely amazing voice.  The whole Lily Allen/Adele style isn't really my bag but I can't help but appreciate such a great voice.

With all that over-emotive gesturing and vowel strangulation she wouldn't look out of place on the X-Factor.

Yes, I totally agree, it's emotive gesturing and lack of correct diction that's ruining pop & rock music.

Well that and chaps with long hair.

National Service would sort it out.

Last night I saw Glasvegas (a terrible Scottish band) and the Lead Singer was clearly miming the whole thing...on Jools !!!!  What next?

This terrible event was overshadowed by the brilliant Cee Lo Green though.  His all girl band had the first female lead guitarist I've ever heard really "get it".

I like it that Cee Lo Green has a fan by the monitor speakers to keep him cool.  (An electrical thing rather than a person).

Missed Glasvegas.

I can't believe he'd be allowed to mime on Later, it's against the ethos of the whole thing. Having said that, there was something definitely odd about the vocals. It's a live transmission, so maybe they'd had some last minute problem. Either that, or his heavily delayed and reverbed vocals made it look like he was miming (his mouth wasn't moving when we were hearing the delayed vocal).

Watched the "Hootenanny", as has become a ritual in my household.

I watched open-mouthed at the performance of Kevin Rowlands/Dexys.
I want to say "abysmal" but I don't think that conveys just how bad it was.

I'm OK with "abysmal" to describe Adam Ant and Petula Clark though, they were just abysmal, but Kevin Rowlands.....Oh my.

Can't disagree :(

Although Adam Ant was so unexpected - and I get such a nostalgia buzz from that song, a real part of my childhood - that it still made me smile. Also, the fact that it looked like Johnny Depp was standing in.

Paloma Faith was very good, as were The Hives.

Some 'older' singers should know when to quit, and TV producers should show some balls. The likes of Macca may still be entertaining, but there are people now singing sooooo much better. Jools should know better  :(

Jules seems to specialise in abysmal at the mo.

The Hives were good though.

Dexys really was bad wasn't he? Seemed to be missing half the words out, as in words cut in half not missing alternate ones.

Hootenanny - live, or recorded weeks ago?  Somehow, the Dubliners managed to appear at the same time they were performing live in Dublin  :-\

Only caught a tiny bit. End of Jake Bugg, which was great, and Emeli Sande who was brilliant. Petulan Clark who was average.

Switched the TV off though when the Hives came on. They were terrible. Unable to sing, just a nasty cacophony of noise. And I usually like rock music, but honestly, this was not music. What possessed him to get them on when there are so many talented folk around?  Afraid Jules Holland has lost my vote after that, and I will be watching something else next year.

The Hootenanny is never live - a reason why I don't like it.

You'll stop watching it forever because of one band you didn't like?

And I'll probably watch it again because he actually put on one band that I liked (a rare thing)- and it's the same band.

... you appear to be quoting my Mum during every 1970's/1980's Top of the Pops.

I'd sum up The Hives as a group that almost perfectly encapsulates Rock Music.  They are what you'd get if you fed Rock Music ingredients into a fairly basic computerised Rock Band Generator (or RBG):

1 - Loud?  Check.
2 - A few simple Guitar chords?  Check.
3 - Pale Skinny front man?  Check.
4 - All their songs are shallow, meaningless, 2.5 minutes long and almost totally identical?  Check.
5 - Get's everyone stamping feet, and generally jumping about?  Check.

"Main Offender" was great (I first heard that on "Later" as well)

Actually I like a very wide range of music including rock, and including very recent and older bands. And other types of music. I listen to a range of music from brand new to old. I am not biased against any particular type. I am just biased against people who cannot sing, play or write music. Of any genre.

They were utter rubbish IMHO.

Hives are essentially punk rockers.  If you only like punks who can play and sing then you don't really get punk.  Actually, Hives have been technically proficiency on record.  They just go (too) mad live.

I wouldn't think much of any long-running TV or radio music show that never featured anyone I thought was rubbish.  I don't expect anyone to know exactly what I like.  I don't know myself until I've heard it.

Why not do what I do: record it and watch it later (yesterday evening for me) and fast forward through the bits you don't like.

We all know it's not live and if you are going to watch TV on NYE then why not watch something more interesting?

Personally, Hive not to my taste along with the performance of Adam Ant and DMR, but the obvious joy that was on Jools' face when accompanying the other artists was fantastic, and what a list of artists his band has played with over the years.  Great performance live if you get the chance and 'Later' remains a great programme IMO.

Clearly a fan!

I didn't think I could dislike Sting any more than I did already.
