Title: Bugs
Post by: David Martin on 20 July, 2009, 02:51:17 pm
I had the time on holiday to take pictures of some bugs. Don't know what they are..

love number 2!!

It took a lot of work to get to that point.. Ended up using my hand to shade the flash so there wasn't too much hitting the top of the grass. Manual balance against the sunset.  Flash on a remote lead, camera handheld, grass blowing in the wind.

Not your average snapshot.

The top ones look very much like the larvae of the second ones. Cinnabar(sp?) moths.

Pretty certain you're right. They feed on ragwort.

I'm pretty sure the moths are 6-spot burnet moths ...

Actually I think you are probably correct. The Cinnabar moth has more red on it I think.

The bottom one (on the ground) looks like a mullein moth caterpillar.  Handsome fellas, but they make a real mess of the plant they live on.  We had mulleins in Lambourn.

The top photo is of Cinnabar moth caterpillars on their larval food plant, Ragwort (a tactic to prevent predators eating the caterpillars).

The second photo is of a 6-spot burnet moth (day-flying moth) and the third is a mullein moth caterpillar.

Lovely, lovely invertebrates all of them

:o  Ummm - shutter speed?? Amazing!

Camera - Canon 20D
Lens - Tamron 180mm Macro

Bee 1/500 f/8.0
Hoverfly on pink flower 1/1250 f/9.0
Hoverfly on purple flower 1/1250 f/9.0
Hoverfly in flight 1/3200 f/14

All cropped to a lesser or greater degree, gimp used to remove spots caused by bits of the Sahara being stuck on the sensor.

I needed a fast shutter speed because the critters (and their wings) don't stay still for long (and my arm was aching and shaking trying to hold a heavy lens), but on the other hand I needed a small aperture because you need all the depth of field you can muster. So I had to use the fastest ISO available (3200), with consequent loss of quality.

A tripod wouldn't have been much good because by the time it was positioned framed and focused I would end up with pictures of empty leaves. A monopod and/or right-angled viewfinder (http://www.speedgraphic.co.uk/prod.asp?i=2730&1=Canon+Angle+Finder+C) might have been useful. I left them at home. D'oh!

I'm saving up for a decent ringflash, which will mean tiny aperture for max DoF and short flash duration to freeze movement.

Your 20D high iso performance is much better than the D80.

I used either an SB800 on a lead (typically TTL mode) or, for the stripy things, an SB800 triggered by a radio slave and a SB24 triggered by an optical slave. f22 or 25.

The high ISO performance of cameras took a quantum leap about 3 years ago, jsut when I bought the D80 which seems to be the last of that earlier era.

I'd also like a longer macro lens to get pics from further away.

They get quite a decent size those devil's coach horse beetles.

When they feel threatened, they'll usually raise their tail up mimicking a scorpion; they will also emit a foul smelling odour.

A little chap I found going for the last of the blackberries.

I think it's a shield bug (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shield_bug).

[Edit: It isn't. I am reliably informed it's a Dock Bug (http://www.britishbugs.org.uk/heteroptera/Coreidae/coreus_marginatus.html) Coreus marginatus]

I spent the last two days playing with a macro lens, but none of my shots are remotely as good as Salvatore's or David's.  :'( Though admittedly I'm not yet halfway through the camera manual, and I've not had a chance to look at the instructions which came with the lens.  :-[

Hints and tips for shooting erratic fast-moving teeny-tiny things gratefully appreciated.*  :)

*Though I haven't got as far as "aperture" or "depth of field" in the manual yet.  ::-)
Title: Re: Bugs
Post by: David Martin on 25 April, 2011, 11:57:32 pm
Manual focus and exposure.
Off camera flash
Set up and wait for the action to come to you. (ie you see a bee moving aroudn the flowers, pick a flower and prefocus so you are ready and waiting.

Throw 99.9% of the shots away.
Then throw the other 0.1% away and practise some more.

Ta.  :)

Don't have an off-camera flash.  :(

How do I make the whole insect be in focus? I was finding that I was getting the head in focus and the body blurry, or vice-versa, and I don't know what words to look up in the instructions.
Title: Re: Bugs
Post by: David Martin on 26 April, 2011, 12:08:38 am
aperture. set it to the smallest (biggest number) and you will have more in focus.

You will however lose shutter speed so wil need a flash.

If you have a sheet of greaeproof paper (and some sticky tape) you can approximate a small softbox in front of your flash which will improve the lighting. Just make a loop from an A4 sized piece. Another bit of white card the other side of the lens will help bounce some light into the shadows. And with your 3rd pair of hands...
Title: Re: Bugs
Post by: rogerzilla on 26 April, 2011, 09:06:16 pm
At these distances depth of field is almost non-existent, even at f/22.  This means focus has to be spot on. Bumblebees ought to be easy though - they are very placid and you can even stroke them while they're crawling on flowers.

The old trick is not to actually focus at all; pre-focus closely on manual and just move the camera until the insect is sharp.  Much easier.

Well, here are my very first attempts (the ones I didn't delete outright! :-[ ). None of them are great. They were all taken outside without flash ('cos I don't have a flash yet :'( ), and I'm a bit annoyed that I forgot to set my ISO setting back to normal after I had been experimenting with forcing it to be too high. I'm no-where near the standard of the rest of this thread, but I'll keep trying.  :)

Loaded with pollen.

As I was getting in close, I kept hearing what I thought was angry buzzing from a neighbouring bush. It turned out to be my model. As it started to gather the pollen/ nectar it folded its wings tight on its back like in Pingus image and the wings shimmered and buzzed quite sharply for a second. I think it is Bumble Bee ecstasy at finding stuff ;D

When photographing melanic harlequin ladybirds, care must be taken to avoid one's reflection:

So instead, here's a proper native seven-spot, nomming away on aphids:

It was pretty difficult deciding which bits to try to get in focus, particularly as they kept moving and I was using a rather cumbersome old manual lens.  There were many other shots that I discarded.  The fourth one was a beautiful blue of some variety but it never came to rest with its wings down.

It's 'that' time of year again, so out come the spiders. Giving myself huge points, seeing as how I'd set the camera on Macro, hand-held, and it was actually about 50mm away from the spider, with me wobbling, him shaking in the breeze.

You could well be right. There was no chance of motion blur. There were lots of them about (in the New Forest) and I may have unknowingly trodden on one or two, but I did flip one over which I had spotted on its back with its legs in the air.

And now for something completely different. One of the pubs by the University has been remodelled in honour of the naturalist (and former professor of biology) D'Arcy Thompson.

Waiter, there's a beer on my bug - the tables have been etched/printed with his original specimen drawings.

Just keeping the thread ticking on.. Might be time for a collection from the first year field trip to Tentsmuir. Pictures taken with a 55mm Micro Nikkor and rather a lot of extension tube.  or a 135/2.8 Nikkor (again with much extension). The square grid is at 5mm spacing. I'd have liked to do dark field illumination but don't have an etched glass scale.

I spotted this in an abandoned quarry in The Lakes.  It is only about 2 inches deep and was empty.  This was in early May.  Is it an abandoned wasps' nest, unfinished, or the nest of a much smaller insect?

(http://www.zen177395.zen.co.uk/Wasp's nest.JPG)

A week or two later, back at home, I saw this mayfly which had just emerged from its previous "shell".  I understand it is the only insect which does this at this stage in its life, so was pretty pleased to see the two together, given the short life of the fully metamorphosed fly.

Not exactly a bug but on the same sort of scale. This is in a plastic storage box that had a bit of earth in then was left in the garden and collected some rainwater. A few days later we see this.
Looks like an earthworm and has been happily swimming about for a few days. Now the middle of it has erupted with loads of wriggly things. Is it reproducing or what?

Good find though, they're pretty big aren't they!
I got a bit excited then, I thought the invasion had started and they were going to be all over the country.

Should've known it wasn't England, it looks sunny on the photos ;D

It was mahoosive -  a very impressive insect. We thought it was a beetle to begin with, but after I thought it was more waspy, beeish in shape.

We met lots of those big black bee chaps in the Ardeche this summer, but I couldn't get them to pause to have their photo taken.

I did meet this chap though who posed nicely on a greenhouse.  Hugest hopper I ever did see.

Cockchafer. Harmless enough. Bimble around in the sky, bumping into windows and entangling themselves unwittingly in womans' hair.

The preferred food for adults is oak leaves, but they will also feed on conifer needles.

Uh-oh! We have a small town garden and, admittedly, hadn't been keeping an eye on things 'wasp-wise', but just at the weekend we were enjoying the late evening sun, with a glass of wine, and thought "Hhmm, seems to be a lot of Wasp traffic in and out of the Virginia Creeper." Well, as you can see below, they've built a home, which is quite entrenched and currently the size of a football. I'm leaving well alone until (hopefully) the've all died or cleared off by the late Autumn.

And some from the Bat and Moth event tonight. My favourite is this one:

I can confirm that trying to focus a macro lens handheld is somewhat challenging.

Unfortunately our moth expert was rather too keen to get  them into glass tubes making photos challenging.

Today's damselfly from my secret insect reserve. About 10 minutes walk away, a footpath between a stream bordered by masses of nettles, brambles and wildflowers too numerous to mention, and a meadow full of flowers (with a few horses from time to time). Sheltered from the west (and the breeze) so leaves stay still, but not from the east (so insects bask in the  morning sun). I've been experimenting with DIY flash diffusers,

Great photo Salvatore. Would be interesting in seeing details of your DIY flash diffuser:-)

Thanks Brian. I looked at various youtube videos returned by a 'DIY flash diffuser' search, but most looked very cumbersome and fragile, fine in a studio but unlikely to survive long in my camera bag on a hike. But it did give me some ideas. This is what I came up with - it's very much a first attempt.

This is it so far. A white plastic container (originally containing Ovaltine), with the neck cut off, and half covered in aluminium foil.

It fits over the flash head. As the (round) plastic has to be bent a bit to fit over the (rectangular) flash head, it stays put without any assistance. It can be packed away pushed back down the flash and still fits inside the faux-velvet drawstring bag.

The flash head is far too high, pointing in the wrong direction considering at 1:1 the subject is only about 70 mm from the front element.

The idea of the foil is to bounce light downwards. I'm not sure how effective it is - more experimentation required. I think the next step is to mount the flash next to the lens somehow. I've got various cables and brackets but don't want to make the ensemble too unwieldy. Also I've an idea to attach the diffuser to the end of the lens (almost like a petal lens hood with diffuser one side and reflector on the other, if you see what I mean).

Anyway, the results. The flash allows me to use an aperture of about f/14 to f/20. The shadows seem to be softened compared to bare flash, although there are bright reflections off any shiny bits of anatomy (but that happens with bright sunlight as well).

This beastie was approx. 3-4 mm long (tip of head to end of wings)

Nice diffuser! Might try similar using an ovaltine tub. Perhaps rather than putting the flash in at the end, cut it at an angle, so the diffuser slopes down towards the lens?

Yes, I see what you mean. I might try that.

Thee most popular item to repurpose as a macro flash diffuser seems to be a Pringles can.

Thanks Andy.

Yesterday I came across this evil-looking beastie. Googling for 'insect with long spike on its back' eventually revealed it to be a parasitoid wasp, a female gasteruption jaculator. She uses her ridiculously long ovipositor to penetrate nests of solitary bees and lay her eggs there. The eggs hatch and eat the bee grubs.

Yesterday I spent several minutes following the progress of this handsome beast walking across and posing a leaf before it scrambled across a gap between the tip of the leaf and this stalk and scuttling up under a leaf.

1:1 magnification, cropped. I've measured its length (in pixels) on the uncropped raw image, and using the size of the image (4000 4600 pixels wide) and the sensor (18mmx12mm), calculated its length to be 6.99 6.08 mm. To the naked eye it's a small thing on a leaf with a slightly brighter green colour than the leaf.

I'm musing about buying a speedflash rather than using the popup on the camera. I could use a diffuser then.

Pingu and Salvatore are you using a flash to get your pictures?

I'm musing about buying a speedflash rather than using the popup on the camera. I could use a diffuser then.

Sometimes I use flash - like this. It's a  Neewer TT560 speedlight, and a diffuser like this (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Universal-Diffuser-Speedlight-Portable-Rectangular/dp/B01GCF422I). All held together with a bracket, magic arm and cable, with the result that the front of the diffuser is right next to the lens.
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49893673453_8248b1fbfa_n.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2j1W7Rc)
Flash is at a fairly low power (giving a shorter duration). My Lumix GX80 is only supposed to sync at 1/160, but with a manual flash I found I can get away with 1/320 without any of the frame being blacked out. Because the fall-off in light is so steep, anything but the subject is dark. I quite like the effect.

Without flash the backgrounds are brighter, but you need plenty of light, in this case bright sunshine.

I've also tried focus-bracketing and stacking as mentioned by andrew_s in the other thread. At the best of times you're depending on the insect staying reasonably still (or not flying away at the very least), but this method relies on it being absolutely still. I managed to produce one image where the insect almost looks OK, but on close inspection appears to have 4 antennae. There are plenty of youtube videos on focus-stacking in a studio where they are using a dead insect, but that's not my cup of tea.

This crane fly picture was produced by bracketing and stacking to get the wings and as many legs as possible in focus. I stacked about 4 or 5 images.
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49862781813_13edebcca3_n.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iYcMQH)

[BTW the lumix gx80 has an in-camera post-focus facility, but it's pants for macro. I use focus bracketing and then hugin utilities to combine the images. Then when that doesn't work I use GIMP to align the images and try again.]

Pingu and Salvatore are you using a flash to get your pictures?

I'm musing about buying a speedflash rather than using the popup on the camera. I could use a diffuser then.

Mostly no flash.

Thanks both. I think I might wait a while before getting a flash since I spaffed far too much money on old OM compatible lens and adaptors in the last couple of weeks. All < £30 but it mounts up, they are just so tempting when they are so cheap. Vivitar 200m F3.5 prime is incoming along with a couple of x2 adaptors for bird photos. Only dud so far has been the MirandaMacro zoom but that was only £6 so cant complain.

Apparently there are over 280 species of hoverflies in Britain and many of them look quite similar so I don't think I am going to attempt to identify exactly what type of hoverfly that is. He/she was very patient though.

A female wasp spider

Its wikipedia entry (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argiope_bruennichi) is, er, informative. e.g.
Quote
Certain males are able to "plug" the female after they have mated with her to prevent other males from copulating with the female. This plugging involves using the entire male's body, thus allowing him to only mate once.

This female wasp spider is in exactly the same place I snapped one 5 days ago, so I assume it's the same one, but this time she is showing off her web-spinning signature. Wikipedia: "The prominent zigzag shape called the stabilimentum, or web decoration, featured at the centre of the orb is of uncertain function, though it may be to attract insects."

This is a female because she has an ovipositor. The male, on the other hand:
Quote
Roesel's bush-crickets have evolved their amazing courtship apparatus.

They have a pair of curved rods called titillators pointing out of their genital openings. They look a bit like coat hooks.

Until recently no one knew what they were for. But it now seems they stimulate a sensitive area of the female's genitals.

The new results have been published in the journal Arthropod Structure and Development.

Gerlind Lehmann of the Humboldt-University Berlin in Germany and her colleagues examined the titillators under microscopes. Then they watched bush-crickets mating, and used CT scans to figure out what the titillators were doing during mating.

They found that the male repeatedly, and rhythmically, inserted the titillators into the female's genital opening.

The titillators were gently drumming on a plate inside the female's genitals. This plate was covered in different kinds of sensory cells, suggesting that the female could detect the titillators' drumming.

This suggests that the titillators are somehow helping the male keep the female interested, much as mating humans perform foreplay on each other's genitals to stimulate sexual desire.

In unpublished experiments, Lehmann tried shortening the titillators.

The females became more likely to resist the male's attempts at mating, and males were less likely to succeed in transferring sperm.

A meadow plant bug Leptopterna dolabrata*. Very amenable to being photographed. After I'd spotted it, I had time to put my bag down, change the lens, attach the flash and find it again. Then I held the grass seed head it was sitting on (my fingers are just out of shot) and twisted it so that the insect was at the right angle and not being blown about by the breeze, and it still didn't fly or jump away.

I saw a fly moving in a suspicious way among the cow parsley flowers, and started snapping away. Only when I got home and saw it on a computer screen did I realise it was being manhandled by a sinister white spider and that it (the fly) was probably dead. The spider's rear end has markings looking like a shocked human face. I think it's a crab spider. They don't weave webs, just camouflage themselves and lie in wait for their prey.

A leafhopper nymph - issus coleoptratus. 6.7 mm from the front of its head to the end of its tail.

They have gears!

According to wikipedia
"the nymphs of this insect have a small, gear-like structure on the base of each of their hind legs. These gears have teeth that intermesh, keeping the legs synchronized when the insect jumps, preventing it from spiraling. This is the first planthopper species in which the function of these gears was described, though their existence had been known for decades. The insects shed this gear before moulting into adults."

An infestation of aphids on a leaf in my garden. The odd insect out (on the left)  is a parasitic wasp. The female wasp pierces the aphids' bodies and injects eggs. The egg hatches inside the aphid and it develops there, eating it from the inside. The aphid swells up, turns a bronze colour, and dies (not necessarily in that order). The bloated body of the aphid is known as a "mummy".

An aphid mummy on a leaf about 3-4 cm below its living chums above. There are about half a dozen on leaves within a 5 cm radius. I check them every day for signs of a new wasp, but as yet there's nothing see below.

I think it's Gasteruption jaculator

I inspected the aphid mummies this morning, and they each had a neat hole in what's left of their bodies. At some time in the previous 12 hours, the wasps developing in the host aphids had each cut a hole and escaped into the big wide world to lead a happy and fulfilled life as a parasitic wasp specialising in making life hell for aphids.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52964407489_e128b295ed_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2oGhr6t)

Because
(a) it was taken with a macro lens at 1:1
(b) I know the sensor size in both mm and pixels
(c) I can get the coordinates of 2 points from GIMP
(d) Pythagoras
I can calculate the size of the hole. In this case, 0.855 mm diameter.

As so often happens, a picture of one insect also includes another insect. In this case I'd uploaded the picture, cropped it a little, and posted it to flickr before I noticed  it. I think at first I dismissed it as some dirt on my PC screen. The hoverfly seems to be very interested in it.

Female common globetail (Sphaerophoria scripta) PLUS bonus insect insectum minimum

Using pythagoras to work out length in pixels, compared to estimated wingspan of hoverfly, I'd say it's length was about 0.3 mm.

"The [robber] fly attacks its prey by stabbing it with its short, strong proboscis, injecting the victim with saliva containing neurotoxic and proteolytic enzymes which very rapidly paralyze the victim and soon digest the insides; the fly then sucks the liquefied material through the proboscis."

I assume that's what's going on here. And probably why it didn't fly away immediately when confronted with the front element of a macro lens.
