Twin slot shelving interoperabilty
« on: 20 November, 2020, 11:11:33 am »
Does anyone know if twin slot shelving is a standard ?

I have some brackets from B&Q but they didn't have the tracks in stock. Screwfix do but will RB UK (Screwfix) tracks work with B&Q brackets?

This is the stuff I mean:

I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

In my experience no.

the de-facto industry standard has long been 'Spur' brand rails and brackets.  These are usually thicker and stronger than most knock-offs.  If you must use a mish-mash, I'd suggest using 'Spur' rails with knock-off brackets. Obviously you need to be sure that the brackets will fit the rails, so buy one to try first.  On any given single shelf it is best if you use matching brackets, since heights vary slightly.

I note also that a tickle with an angle grinder will often make other brackets fit in Spur rails OK, even if they don't to start with.

A little reading matter here;

it seems that one variable is the slot pitch in the rails; UK standard has long been 31.75mm but some knock-offs are 32mm pitch.  IIRC this only becomes a problem if you want to mix rail types on the same wall; brackets from either will (or can be made to) fit.

B&Q and Screwfix are the same company, so a lot of their products are much the same. Though no idea about those shelves.

Thanks all.

I ordered all new stuff from Screwfix as I want to get this done. The bits I already have from B&Q I will test against these and will be deployed in teh garage as a future project either with B&Q or Screwfix rails dependant on how compatibility tests out but that's not an urgent project.

We have both genuine Spur and the older B&Q stuff which are interchangeable.  I found a business seller on EBay who specialises in twinslot and who provides all the measurements in the listing, and bought from them with no problems.

If you have the rails which have the slots in a slight dip, I'm not sure they're compatible. All our slots are flush to the rail edges.
