Title: Rarer Audax UK medals
Post by: nerion on 14 August, 2018, 10:38:34 pm
Hi everyone, I joined Audax almost three years ago and have become absolutely hooked. One reason for that, apart from the cycling itself and meeting some wonderful people, has been the bling!

I feel like I'm in the Brownies/Cubs, collecting all these medals. I buy a distance medal after every ride and a Grimpeur medal if it involves AAA points.

I have three Brevet 1,000 medals, one for the Randonneur 1,000, one for the AAA (the red one) and one Mile-eater.

Now I want more! I'm not quite up to SR standard yet, though I do hope to achieve this in a another year or so. I've done my first 300 and will be doing a 400 next month.

But I know there are some medals up for grabs for single rides or multiple rides, such as the Grimpeur du Sud - something else I hope to do next year.

A couple of others I have found are these:

The first is for the Dorset Coast, a 200k in April, so I intend on entering that one.

The second is for the ACME Winter Series in Essex, which features four 100k rides over the winter. I've entered the first three and will enter the fourth once it's listed.

So does anyone know of any more that can be collected? If so, please let me know - and include a photo!

Many thanks,

Andie

PS I found these pics with Google. There are a fair few medals I don't recognise here, aside from the usual distance/Grimpeur/Brevet/Randonneur ones. Can anyone help?

Good question. I presume some medals are specific to a particular event but some are generic. Is there any way of telling which events have their own medal I wonder.

Organisers who produce their own medals don't normally keep them too much of a secret, but AFAIK there isn't a definitive list - AUK doesn't try to collate one.

Hence this thread. Let's make a list right here.  :)

The one on the right of the two AAA red badges kind of sprocket shaped is the "raid pyreneen" medal, I've got one too...

My Margaret Hopper Audax UK jersey has a fair range of cloth badges sewn onto it. None are rare though.

Above that looks like a MileEater medal (Free with validated diary??)

Stevenage Start of Summertime (in both pictures with the sun and the clock)?
and what looks like a 2007 PBP medal too

A couple of years ago I identified over a 100 different items available - although some were just the remaining stocks of older designs.
I'm hoping the shop in the new website will make it easier to have everything available in one place.

The top picture was my collection. Not all of them are Audax UK (for example the  Rough Stuff Fellowship pins at the top left and the three Raid medals).

Most are AUK badges and medals for various landmarks or distances.  Both AAA and brevet.

Others are individual rides, either local (Dartmoor Devil, Stevenage Summertime, Dorset Coast) or ones like End to End or LEL.  Amongst them are also some Overseas medals.  Others are Easter Arrows and Dinner Darts.

Good fun collecting them.  If there are any in particular you want identified just ask.

But I know there are some medals up for grabs for single rides or multiple rides, such as the Grimpeur du Sud - something else I hope

The GdS medal wasn't intended to be smaller than the standard AUK size but they cost a lot more for anything bigger than 25mm and we didn't think we'd ever sell more than 30 on a 100 minimum order (There are now 300!)

it is the same size and also similar to the very cute IOW Randonnee (which is still a qualifying GdS) medal;

probably best to ask the present organiser, they may be able to point you in the right direction

it's a colour version of their logo; rob is your man for how to get the special one which requires the 400 (if the award even still exists)

There used to be a series of events with Bronze/Silver/Gold status to get the Invicta medals.  I’m not involved any more and there’s no Invicta 400 now so I’m not sure what you would need to do to get them or if they still exist.

The Raid Pyrenean is a Randonnee organised by the Pau Velo club... it's not an Audax as such, the time limit of 100 hours to complete 712 km doesn't fit with Audax ones.

The structure is that of a permanent brevet, so card, stamps etc...

A couple of years ago I identified over a 100 different items available - although some were just the remaining stocks of older designs.

You mean collectors' items.   ;)

Here is the audax equivalent of a misprinted penny black -
I think only 2 of these were struck, Keith Benton may still have the other one:

The above was the manufacturer's sample before the production run for the year 2000.
The actual production was not finished in gold though:

Even these are quite rare as the monochrome medals were only issued for 2000,
for 2001-2003 the production reverted to the usual coloured type:

That's very rare I think - must date back to about 1980, it had certainly been replaced by 1983 when I first rode WCW.
It's in good nick too, that particular style of spoked medal was very prone to tarnish, even when stored carefully.

The lower picture is from an article on our club website and I used some of the 'bling' from my archive. The badges and patches were selected to show a variety of designs rather than events. Most should be recognisable from the AUK web shop, but here are a few clues to the others:
http://www.westerley.cc/audax-the-basics/

Row one from left: Old AUK distance badge
Row two from left: 1) Start of Summertime medal, Stevenage, no longer run as an Audax 2) ACP SR medal 3)  AUK SR medal  4) AUK Brevet 1000
Row Three from left: 1) Grimpeur du Sud x 5 patch 2) Grimpeur di Sud x1 medal 3) Old RRTY patch 4) Dorset Coast 200 medal
Row Four from left: 1) Wessex SR patch
Row Five from left: 1) Hard Boiled 200 souvenir 2) Old Brevet Populaire 100klm medal

We also give all entrants on our May day Chiltern Audax events a 'one off' collectable mudguard sticker each year. New routes and new stickers every year. 2019 events now on the calendar, already plotting 2020 event!

I have 3xPBP finisher awards, 2xLEL, some ACP SR awards, and the Ultra Randonneur trophy. I never bothered much with the smaller ones nor did I order the Brevet 25,000 badge. I think I have an Elenith 25 year anniversary one.

I cherish the rowing trophies I won in 2017 (1) & 2018 (4) more. These arguably took more work despite the races themselves being no more than about 6-7 minutes at worst, because of the amount of training and practice required to reach the required standard to be competitive.

I don't know if these are rare, but they're old. The Eastern Counties Cycling Association one says on the back that it was a 100k in 1992; the Stevenage Start of Summertime would be about the same vintage. The Les Belles d'Europe were a series of rides - not audax - either side of the channel in the years before 1996, I don't think they continued much after. Random 100 / 150 / 200 medals.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190411/ba154e8a952a20f8c17305b6d9161e85.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190411/a0fa15547fec443ac5adad8d94daa9de.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190411/aa5b66bba083d393a9fe909141656322.jpg)

Love those little lugs for attaching date bars; both long gone now. If hung from a saddlebag they probably constituted a Health and Safety hazard for some riders as they might get stuck in the spokes...

(or even rear mech!)

my personal favourites are the Tour of 3 Counties and To Battle and Back; events run by that great man who introduced me to Audax, Tim Wainwright
