David is troubled he seems unable to erase pencil marks from paper cleanly.

He is mainly marking music scores. I hope he is using 2B pencils but can't be sure he's not using HB sometimes.

What does the yacf hive mind recommend?

2B Should be relatively easy to remove.

I use Staedtler Rasoplast Plastic, works well enough, doesn't smear.

Staedtler Mars Plastic seems more common and very similar.

One art supply shop I went to had loads of different kneadable rubbers for artists but only one "normal" rubber which happened to be the Staedtler Mars Plastic.

When I did Technical Drawing as a spotty yoof (Grade 4 CSE) my teacher used to say that in a professional drawing office they would use electric rubbers, I've just googled & they are actually a Real Thing ....

Faber Castell erasers are the best and we have a big tub of them in the shop. PM me your address and I'll send you a couple.

My drawing teacher used them and in pursuit of excellence I bought one.
When I realised I had not a jot of artistic talent nor the patience to search deep and find it the rubber lay in a drawer until the batteries leaked.

Staedtler as suggested. Many small stationary shops stock them.

IIRC the Staedtler Mars Plastic is good and readily available. However if you are trying to rub out small details (which you might be on a music score) you will soon rub off all four (or eight) sharp corners and then it'll be a problem.

You can buy things that look like propelling pencils (which sometimes accept the refills which fit in electric erasers) and these allow detailed erasing almost regardless of the state of wear of the refill. You might like to consider one of those.

The pentel clic eraser ZE22

is like this and IIRC the refill material is very similar material to the Staedtler eraser.

Both of mine still get regular use when I'm not using CAD or Sketchup

ETA - That's pretty much what my boss (who is 10 years younger than me) said when he saw me using one at work.
ETFA - somewhat amazingly, you can still buy them.
ETEFA - I used to do a lot of work in conte when I was at Central St.Martins. With that you really do need an eraser shield to keep your work crisp.

My eldest daughter spent 4 years in the USA on a soccer scholarship. Early on, she asked in class to borrow a "rubber". That word has another connotation over there - she didn't know. She does now.

Was awaiting that one...some time ago a 'friend' offered to 'knock up' a young woman on the way to a meeting when over in the USA
Not at all sure he was entirely unaware of the double meaning
