Interesting And Unusual YouTube Channels
« on: 14 June, 2020, 07:37:03 pm »
I've been watching rather too much YouTube lately, but these are some channels I keep coming back to:
Andrea Gibson My absolute favourite spoken word poet.

Beau of the Fifth Column Southern Common Sense
Fairyland Cottage Slow Living With an Irish nurse
Internet Shaquille  Charming and practical Mexican-American cook
Engels Coach Shop  Old-fashioned Wheelwright

And you?

AvE Taking stuff apart to see how it works and if its any good. Mainly workshop equipment. Unique commentary style.

Scoutcrafter Tool history and restoration.

Geoffrey Croker Series Landrover and lathe restorations in Australia
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

Abom79 Heavy machining from Adam Booth
Latifs inspired Foooooood
Doubleboost, John Mills, "a mechanic who pisses about" but actually good for welding, machining, plasma cutting
Tod's workshop.  Edged weapons, and sundry other items
Martin zero. Urban and industrial history around Manchester
Keith Rucker Vintage machinery restoration

Second votes for Engels, and AvE.  EEVBlog is worth a mention, but his voice is a bit of an 'acquired taste' which I haven't actually acquired.  A shame, because the info's good.

ETA: I forgot Jeremy Fielding, wood, motors, salvage and solving problems.

Acorn to Arabella. Two guys in the USA building a 38' sailing ship, starting with the trees they have "on the property". It's taking a while...

Abom, This OldTony, Engels all on my subs list. As is Stefan Gotteswinter. A German ( ?) machinist doing stuff to teeny weeny tolerances.

The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain are doing some good lockdown videos, as is John Finnemore's close friend Arthur Shappey. Episode 20: Fitton. (Episodes 1-19 have also been based in Fitton)

EEVBlog, clive, AvE and so on have already been mentioned.

Wintergatan - In which we follow Martin's evolution from musician to engineer to philosopher and hopefully back to musician again, as he (with a little help from half the internet) attempts to construct a reliable version of the now legendary Marble Machine instrument, with the aim of taking it and the rest of the band on a world tour.

ElectroBOOM - Not always strictly educational, but this guy knows how to make videos.

Practical Engineering has taught me a surprising amount about concrete.

Technology Connections is a bit of a mixed bag.  Knows his stuff about toasters.

Techmoan - as above.  Most of these aren't that interesting to me, but I love his explorations of obsolete recording media.

Tom Scott needs no introduction, but the various Technical Difficuties series are particularly entertaining.

Black Girl In A Big Dress I found amusing.

Velo-ads John Williams and many of The Usual Suspects do darksidey things.

MedCram has a series of >100 videos on the current pandemic, pitched at just the right level for a morbid lay-git like me. Starts here, current vid here (re Trump, natch). Good examples of the series are molecular biology primer and Covid-19 and clotting.

Anything new is usually explained clearly here before being mangled a week or two latter by the media.

More metal machining, Blondihacks

She's a Canadian hobby machinist, using an infuriating mix of imperial and metric measurements. Very clear explanations of what it is she's doing

Adam Savage - Maker of things
All the Stations - London transport facts and stuff.
Animal Logic - Short vids about animals
Big Car - Videos about car history
Chillichump - Channel about growing chillies and making sauces
Chris Salomone - Furniture and woodwork
Colin Furze - Crazy maker
CruisingTheCut - Narrowboating adventures
Darbin Orver - Maker, mostly wood related
Dave Rat - Sound engineer
DIY Perks - Another maker with some interesting projects. Less woodworky than the others.
Ed Pratt - Dude who unicycled around the world.

EEVBlog, clive, AvE and so on have already been mentioned.

Unfortunately it would appear the guy behind EEVBlog is a bit of a fuckwit. I have been avoiding his channel since. Which is a shame, technically he had some good content.

The rest of your list is a disturbingly full list of my usual youtube watch content

Tom Scott needs no introduction, but the various Technical Difficuties series are particularly entertaining.

Useless trivia, I have helped in the production of at least 3 of his videos, plus some of the tech diff live stuff.

I would add to the above:

French guy cooking aka Alex - Really interesting content from someone who appears to be a really nice guy. When a maker takes up cooking. (This old Tony who is mentioned up thread has helped him with a Pasta machine).

Blondihacks Come for the machining content, stay for the metric trolling. Quinn rocks, I like her approach to machining, and it's really refreshing that when she talks about having a small workshop, it is actually a small work shop, I'm fed up with youtubers who's small work shop turns out to be larger than my flat.

Dorian Bracht aka Joint Venture Who knew that attaching two bits of wood together could be so interesting to watch...

Alexandre Chappel Norwegian maker who has an obsession with doing crazy stuff with 3d printers... as well as casting things... Unfortunately seems to use way too much (i.e. any at all) MDF.

Adrian Preda Really good wood working in a very small space.

Bernadette Banner Historical clothing, production, as well as the history behind some of it. Well produced, interesting content from someone who knows her stuff.

Laura Kampf German Maker, an interesting mix of crazy and useful projects.

And then, last but not least,

Get Hands Dirty Amazing maker from Portugal, does interesting stuff with making over a tiny apartment, as well as other interesting projects, I can even forgive her obsession with MDF.

There you go, that should fill your viewing time in nicely...
