Sorry I can't make it - another private view at the Aubrey Gallery on 5th - just their summer exhibition featuring a few of mine...

I need cheering up (5hit day at work) so my thoughts have turned to forward planning ...

Friday 5th July.

Who fancies joining me on a ride around Colchester ticking off some pubs in the Good Beer Guide?  And, as me and Huggy can attest, those nice people at The Victoria Inn let you bring takeaways (ample local choice)  into their boozer.  They even provide crockery and cutlery on the understanding you'll be sinking lots of beer (other drinks are available).  If there's going to be a few of us they asked that we phone them beforehand, which I'm happy to do.

Thoughts?

This event is now less than a week away.  Who's coming???

Summary: cycling, beer, curry, possible train ride home.  Comedy off-roading can also be incorporated if required.

Sadly, or not so sadly, I will be doing all of those things but in Yorkshire.

Monday has so far failed to excite my interest and as I am working from home some forward planning has taken place.

I propose our target unvisited (by me) Good Beer Guide pubs are:

The Fat Cat (65 Butt Road, CO3 3BZ) - "Well established free house with guest ales mainly from East Anglia ... well chosen Belgian specialities"

The New Inn (36 Chapel Street South, CO2 7AX) - "Traditional two-bar back street local that has been transformed into a free house, offering mainly ales from local micros and a fine selection of malt whiskies ... a library  :o ... dogs welcome in the public bar"

In a few days time, once I have a handle on numbers, I will phone the Victoria Inn to ensure they are aware we would like to eat curry and drink (lots of) beer, plus possible pots of tea, in their lovely pub (as endorsed by me and Huggy).

I also have a proposed route from Witham.  It largely follows NCN1 including the slightly muddy bike path round the back of the zoo.  This is the section shown as a straight line.  There are alternatives.  For the return journey we can either jump on a train or follow the A12 cycle lane or do something entirely different.

What do we think?

What time is the grand depart from Witham? I'm a 'maybe', largely dependant on start time.

I'm a tentative "yes" (although I will be riding entirely on roads - specifically ones comprising not less than 50% tarmac!).
You are in a maze of twisty flat droves, all alike.

I'm on for Friday. Meet at 7.15ish at the Albert near the station?

I'm with Oaky. No comedy off roading or 'muddy bike paths' thanks. :hand:

Due to advance planning of Mrs H we are otherwise engaged on Friday evening so I will not be able to join the mud fest, also known as Colchester pub ride & crawl  :(

You aren't contemplating letting me down, letting YACF down and worst of all, letting yourself down, are you?  :D

I set a precedent many moons ago (shame you weren't paying attention  :-*  ) and have always gone for a eclectic selection of drinks whilst out on bicycle expeditions around our local hostelries.  On Tuesday night I enjoyed a pint of Aspalls in one of their nice glasses.  You should expand your mind young Wow, who knows where you might end up!

PS - I should point out that the Vic Inn has it's own cider bar and that CAMRA also supports real ciders.  So there  :P

Actually, no. To me, all beers from Bury St. Edmunds taste pretty much the same. Somewhere between South Woodham Ferrers and Maldon would suit me. The Round Bush springs to mind as a perfect dwelling place.

Hmmm. Cider eh? Reminds me of times spent at Norwich Beer Festival. Be careful drinking that stuff. If it's got bits in BEWARE. You'll turn in to a wierdy beardy and take to wearing dead animals on our head and living in the woods.

OD only does that at weekends.

Does he swap his sun hat 'n sweatband combo for a racoons tail with snakeskin skull cap?

Talking of beardy weirdies, we may be joined by the cycling chapter of CAMRA Colchester.  I gather they might be out on maneuvers.
