Samantha Fish and Jesse Dayton at York Barbican last night.

Blimey that was some filthy rock and roll!

I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

Brain of Britain Final last night at Broadcasting House.

I knew some answers, but not as many as the contestants.

Get the Blessing at Moth Club: Ornette Coleman-ish jazz rock from Brizzle with subtle electronic effects. Particularly liked the drummer and bassist, who have both worked with Portishead

The Rose of Avalanche and The March Violets, at Chalk in Brighton on Wednesday night. With an old friend. I enjoyed both, the Rose of Avalanche more than when I saw them last year. March Violets were charismatic and I think made more sense live in a dark room than on spoitify at my desk.

The Mission at the Roundhouse. Lots of singing, some confetti, much better than the Sisters were.

Planet Rock's Blues Power night at Dingwalls.  Opening act Rebecca Downes, a small blonde woman who sings can belto fronting up a five piece band.  I think she said the keyboard player used to be in Fine Young Cannibals :o

Next up guitarist Danny Bryant with keyboard accompaniment from “Jamie”.  Didn’t quite work.  He'd be worth seeing with a proper band though.

Headline act King King.  It's been a while since I saw them in a venue this small and back then they were only a foursome.  With both Nimmo brothers belting out fat juicy riffs it was fucking loud and my ears are still protesting an hour or more afterwards

Bill Orcutt guitar quartet at Kings Place: four guitars but only 16 strings between them. Part of the London Jazz Festival, but definitely not jazz unless Beefheartish syncopations with a dash of minimalism and a side order of scratchy improv count as jazz

Well, last night was Dr and The Medics. Who were predictable but fun.

and, amongst others, Phats and Small. In my head I imagined them to be grindy industrial thick lung busting stuff. But they were poppy DJ fun.

It is simpler than it looks.

The Necks at Kings Place. First time in Europe since Covid. As ever, it was hard to reconcile what you were seeing (drums, acoustic bass, piano) with the alien sounds reaching your ears

Kosheen.

Never heard of them, but they are Bristol contemporaries of Portishead. More poppy than the latter, but quite interesting.

The Necks again, this time in Paris. What can I say, I like them. Utterly different from last week’s performance

The Orb, in Brighton. Two hours of happy dancing, found some old friends. They seemed to be enjoying themselves too.

Edit to add, as I didn’t mention it before:
I also saw Ozric Tentacles in the week. Who were also good fun. I was less fussed about Gong though.

Dr Phil Hammond at a fund-raising evening last Thursday.  Good food, various local comedians and a band whose members are plumbers during the day (they played conventional instruments).

Any good?

I've seen them on two or three occasions over 25 years and on one they were OK, one quite bad, and the other unspeakably awful. They are playing here in February, but it's £25 which is a lot to pay if they don't deliver.

Funnily enough I was talking to someone yesterday who had seen them in Gloucester and said exactly the same thing.

I first saw Ozrics in 1991, and then a few times over the following decade. They were always really tight, and really high energy.

Yes, I think the Orb were good. I first saw them in 92? though I may not always be a reliable witness to the quality of their performance ;) It’s a DJ plus laptop thing, obviously. It wasn’t a straight rerun of the classsics, but lots of recognisable UFOrb / Adventures type bits in there. The crowd were pretty energised, and they did a full 2 hour set. I’d go again.

Ozrics are a band I saw quite a lot in the early 90s too - in the classic Ozrics / Senser / Eat Static lineup. Yes, still really tight, danceable and enjoying it. I don’t know Gong’s music well, which doesn’t help, but they always feel a bit forced to me.

John Crace last night.  Got there despite the trains not running, torrential rain, and me being injured.  He was an entertainingly thoughtful speaker.
