Had a couple of calls recently “This is your local police force. We have a warrant for your arrest. To speak to the investigating officer, press 1”.

I saw that and was a bit worried initially.  Then I realised I was still in my Junk folder looking for an email I wanted!!

Had one of the Microsoft Technical Dept phone calls today from "Michael" who sounded like he was in a very busy office, some continents away, with a bad connection.

The usual phone call - we have noticed your computer is compromised with all sorts of malware etc. blah blah

Decided to play along for a while.

Once he realised I didn't have a Windows OS, he guessed correctly i had a Mac. He suggested I open the Mac app CONSOLE. I did - and he asked what was on the screen. I accurately described the window I was seeing. He was confused - he didn't seem to believe me, he got a bit shouty. Then a "security manager" took over the call.

Any road it went for 15 minutes or so, during which time my refusal to go any further incensed their frustration and he got a bit fractious. I was told my correct name, home address and telephone number belonged to a child pornography ring and they were going to block my computer? Unless I took it to Reading - if I refused to help them "help" me during our chat.

The line went dead. But what bothers me is being correctly identified by name, address and telephone number.

From 0121 428 0116. This number doesn't take incoming calls.

Voice-activated software waits for me to say 'Hello'. After a brief wait (and noise in the background) Jane, from Virgin Media, (in a very strong south asian accent) hesitantly asked me how I was. I told her that I was still suffering from concussion. There was a silence; as I don't think she was expecting that from her script. Another few seconds and then the automated message: "The other person has cleared".

Very easy to fall for this one. Before I read it I’d clicked on a tracking link from Royal Mail :o

Luckily it was about delivering my new router..

Phishing email saying I was owed several hundred thousand dollars and if I would just send my bank details ... So far so predictable but this one was in German.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

A lengthy email from barcplus(?) explaining how the forum had rules that had been transgressed, not necessarily by me (my username is Jack, apparently) and giving various links where I could find out more, take action or whatever.

Barcplus seems to be a forum for Barclays customers but I am not a member.

I consigned it to the spam folder without clicking links.

Contact support - insurance company - via their online secure messaging. Spam immediately switches from stuff about bitcoin to 10 different requests for me to respond to replies that apparently await my urgent attention in various implausible places. How does that work?

Two calls today, from 076xx numbers. Meant to look like mobile numbers so you call back - at £1.50/min as they actually are from a premium line scam company.

Really odd one today. My sister sent me a copy of a file sent from a relative of my grandmother identifed via a geneological site. The attached file allegedly containing info relating to family history was in VBa format together with a password which could not be read via the usual means. The ISP mentioned in the email address was an Iranian oil company registered in Tehran and does not match that of previous email correspondence. My AV software logged it as a trojan dropper. So I guess the relative's PC email data set has been hacked.
