SPOTY 2021

I never watch it but the joke doing the rounds is "Can't wait to find out who's the runner-up to Emma Radacanu!"

1-10 with William Hill.

In case anyone was wondering, like Tyson Fury, I have insisted that my name not be included in the shortlist this year.

eta: seems like the BBC listened to me but ignored Tyson Fury.

There is a cyclist but she's rather lower-profile.

Looking at that shortlist, they will have waited until the FIA had decided who was going to be F1 World Champion.
It is simpler than it looks.

Nigel Mansell and Damon Hill also won it in years when they didn’t win the F1 title, although the rumour is that Mansell's only opposition in 1986 was a snooker table.

The snooker table was controversial - it was only there because the safety car had fouled the deciding black.

A few days ago Raducanu was 1/5 on with an online bookie who were offering £20 of free bet if you laid just a tenner.

I was momentarily tempted to earn myself an easy fiver, but then couldn't face the thought of all the spam that would follow.

Why is the BBC so infatuated with Tom Daley? Half a gold medal for synchromised jumping into a pool; They did at least grudgingly mention his partner (in passing)!

As upthread, other cyclists notable by their absence, but all other nominees will be a long way behind the tennis player anyway

It does feel wrong that Cav isn't there, but then his feats were more than four months ago, so already receding into the dim and distant past.

Agree.  Much as I dislike boxing, Fury is the outstanding candidate there if we are talking about prowess and "personality", which he has, however dubious.  Raducanu may well win this but I suspect it will be the last thing she does win.  I'd have included Gareth Southgate, Marcus Rashford and Cav..  But I might have a few bob on Adam Peaty as a surprise winner (except I don't bet).

Is monstrous gammon S-T Fury appealing to his fans to vote for someone else again?

SPOTY used to be one of those Christmas TV rituals along with World's Strongest Man.  Looking at the shortlist, doesn't seem much point in watching this year.  Will just watch the next episode of Wheel of Time on Amazon prime instead.

Sporting campaigns can also help with SPOTY.

In 2010 there were horse races in the calendar such as:  "Vote A.P. McCoy For BBC Sports Personality Novices' Chase"
