The "Disgrace of Gijón" is the name given to a 1982 FIFA World Cup football match played between West Germany and Austria at the El Molinón stadium in Gijón, Spain, on 25 June 1982. The match was the last game of the first-round Group 2, with Algeria and Chile having played the day before. With the outcome of that match already decided and known, a win by one or two goals for West Germany at the expense of Austria would result in both West Germany and Austria qualifying instead of Algeria, which had defeated West Germany in the first game. The Germans scored the only goal within the first 10 minutes of the match, which progressively deteriorated towards near standstill in the second half.

The slogan for the mens' version is "Now is All", which although less bombastic, is patently false, at least until the final.

I saw a tweet the other day, might have been from Lineker iirc, that said no country should be allowed to host the [men's] World Cup that wouldn't host a women's version.

Got me thinking - Fifa really ought to take it one stage further and make it a condition that the host nation also puts on the women's event, in the same stadiums, in much the same way that the Olympics/Paralympics are always held by the same host.

Anyone noticed the suspicious absence of ING-ER-LAND flags while out and about?  I can't work out if it's because the sportball fans are boycotting for political reasons (seems unlikely), that the hospitality industry has its hands full with Christmas and isn't making an effort, or that everyone's too skint to adorn their cars and houses with plastic tat.

Saw a brilliant Flagfest car when I was out for the first time. Wrapped bonnet, covered wing mirrors, flags off each window.

I meant to take a photo, but got chatting to the lovely lady from the local brewery.
