Poland would have gone through anyway, according to the Graun, because of the Yellow Cards Tiebreak Rule.

They went through on goal difference, which means if Argentina or Mexico had scored one more, Mexico would have got that second place. Yellow cards only come after that. And of course we all remember that England won the Fair Play Award in... was it 1990?
