Moving meters especially gas - how
« on: 22 September, 2020, 04:39:44 pm »
Friend has bought a flat and as she is doing a renovation I thought it would be a good idea to move the meters around so that they are tucked away. The gas meter is a particular problem as the pipe runs through a cupboard.

How can we move the gas meter and associated pipework?

thanks

You cannot move the meter legally it needs to be a service company. Some will offer a free service if the distance is short i.e. 90cm or less otherwise a fee is involved.

This. Our kitchen designer put our washing machine under the sink until I pointed out the gas meter. The bloke that oversaw the fitting said we would have to call Scottish Gas Networks in if we wanted to do that. It sounded like more hassle than it was worth so I didn't bother.
Do not clench. It only makes it worse.

As has been said, moving meters is the Supplier's business.
It's not something you can DIY.

But that's not to say it's impossible: you need to contact your suppliers and ask for a quote.

Could ask about getting a smart meter fitted, and see if they will move it as part of that.
Location may be less relevant for a smart meter, as you don't need to read the numbers regularly. So could hide it in the back of a cupboard. Though it needs to get a network connection.

Also with flats, you may need freeholders permission to make alterations (even drilling through walls for pipes), check the lease
