.NET on Linux
« on: 16 May, 2008, 10:58:09 am »
I know there are a million and one threads on Linux here, but I'd just like to ask if the above is reliable?

The only reason I use .NET is because my clients require it. After spending 2 hours this morning just trying to get a  Windows box to boot, I'm really getting p!ssed off with it!

I've run Old Skool asp apps on Linux before and to be honest, it wasn't that reliable. I've read various bits and pieces about deploying .NET apps on Linux, but I'm not sure if I'm convinced.

I'm starting to despise Microslut's deliberately shite operating systems, but I quite like .NET and need to continue using it.....

Any thoughts?
Those wonderful norks are never far from my thoughts, oh yeah!

There was an open-source project called Mono to develop a .NET style framework for *nix operating systems.
I don't know how successful it has been.

You need a decent IT tech to whip Windows into line and get that box working properly, and you already know someone who could do this for a small fee ;D

Try MoMA to test your application for compatibility with Mono.

Funny thing, it was only yesterday that I was looking to this, and I remembered that over at the old place ChrisS had mentioned VirtualBox which he had used to load an run Visual Studio on a Linux Box. He reckons that it work pretty well.

Plus 1 to virtual box. Run a full featured windows installation in a virtual machine.

Ach! Apologies. I have no idea how that got to the top of the list. Darned monkey fingers.
