Not only hedgehogs but snakes and similar species even more so: I used to strim an abandoned plot a couple of times a year and it was rare not to kill a slow worm (though I spotted and saved more than I killed); grass snakes were rarer and, being larger, easier to spot. Used to transfer the survivors an adjoining area of long-term grass and scrub but they probably slithered back very soon afterwards.
