Planet X release new MTB; pre order price £800

Use the code PREORDER200 for the 20% off deal. I'm not on the market personally but the VFM looks very good. SRAM Sx, Rockshox 35 gold RL fork, fulcrum red zone 29er wheels. Comes in black or orange. Seatpost is 30.9.

I think I'd still choose to order the Deedar because of the steel factor.

I succumbed to one of thee framesets today at the preorder price of £225 (use the code). I'll have to either sell something or take something apart...

It will (eventually) be singlespeed

Whatever you swap it for is likely to have been better.
This really is a triumph of marketing - tell people how bad something is and they'll think you're joking.  I don't think they are.

They call it 'gas pipe' tubing in the description but in others they say it's basically Reynolds 520. For me gas pipe means 'hi ten' or 'plain gauge' i.e. the most basic steel you can make bikes out of, which is what my delivery/town bike is made from. No butting, no fancy heat treating, nowt.

520 is 525 that is made by a manufacturer other than Reynolds, it wouldn't mean much with the sticker, it means absolutely nothing without.  Nowhere in the PX description does it say it's butted or heat treated, so I'm going to assume it isn't.  Then maybe it is, marketing again, people will buy without knowing.
At least we can be pretty sure these are PX frames, unlike the new Ti range which is straight from the Alpkit catalogue, about which they're not happy, some of the early preview shots even had the wrong logo.

Ah yes, but it doesn’t need to be very good. Just an enjoyable rigid singlespeed off road bike. I’ve already got a set of wheels and most, if not all, of the bits to be honest. So think of it as a bit of fun. If it’s awful, at least it will stop the bits spreading across the shed.

I wasn’t about to spend 325 on it!

But IMO you could have done so much better for your £225.

That’s boost standard though and I didn’t want to faff with new wheel and bottom bracket standards really, although I suppose it’s possible to adapt a set of 700c road wheels for the job.

It’s built and ridden!

It would up with 12 gears rather than 1, but is otherwise absolutely fine. Rides nicely and seems to handle well on the dirt and loose. I’ll run lower tyre pressures next time though.

Before assembly I waved a can of 2 pack around it - hoping to slow the rust a bit. Apparently the tubing is double butted. Overall I’m happy.
