Wordpress and document management

A bit of a long shot this one, but...

Does anyone have any recommendations for a Wordpress document management plug-in?
I have a site which houses a large number (~100) of documents to do with the management of the organisation.
At the moment, I'm uploading them manually and adjusting the index page likewise, which is tedious, error prone, and a maintenance nightmare, particularly for any successor. It would be really good to allow the management of the organisation to do this themselves.
Looking on the Wordpress site, it would appear that such things exist (which doesn't surprise me), but I have no idea how to chose.
So if anyone can help, either with direct suggestions, or advice on how to decide for myself, I would be grateful. Free would be good, but possibly not essential.
