Winter Cycling Pics to inspire others to get out on their bikes
« on: 05 December, 2012, 08:51:28 pm »
As per the title; this thread is to post pictures of you cycling through the winter months. Hopefully inspiring others not to hibernate at this time of year. Only rule is that it must be winter cycling and should be a recent photo i.e. one taken within a week or two of posting.

Here's mine to get it going. These are near Letchworth in Hertfordshire, taken this morning, on my off road commute to work.

Looking forward to seeing other's winter pics.

My one and only pic of cycling in properly wintery conditions:

Not exactly inspiring, is it?

IIRC that ride ended in darkness with thick fog that had me steering by the Garmin in a manner not entirely dissimilar to that bit in Hunt For Red October.

The descent off Helvellyn towards Grisedale Tarn.

The descent off Helvellyn towards Grisedale Tarn.

That looks like a great ride! I'm officially jealous!

Yeah - awesome pic, but you need to be careful. That isn't really a lake - it's a metal roof. And when it opens you need to take cover from the blast of one of Blofeld's rockets!  :P
Those wonderful norks are never far from my thoughts, oh yeah!

Bit of an old one from me too I'm afraid. Bring on the snow !

It was quite the hike-a-bike - probably half the "ride" was actually carrying the bike through deep snow/ over ice. However, it was totally worth it for the bits which were ridable. I'd not really considered that there might be snow when I arranged this ride about a month ago!

I say Wow! to these pics. Nothing like that over here yet and AFAIR last winter was more ice than snow. Phil W's second photo especially clicks with me, I think it's cos of the reeds and the snow's lumpiness yet unbroken cover.

I'm mountain biking in peak over weekend, so will hopefully get some more good winter biking shots. Webcams and traffic reports indicate snow coming down and roads closed right now.

The descent off Helvellyn towards Grisedale Tarn.

I've ridden that in the summer. It's a great descent whatever time of year you do it.

Not inspiring so much as gloomy really, but I don't have many pics of cycling in the snow (I'm usually too busy trying not to fall off). A commute a couple of years ago, when my studded tyres were shiny and new:

Not recent, in fact 8th Jan 2010, but the coldest ride I've ever been on. -6°C when I left home, a balmy -4°C when I got home. The bike is held up by the snow, and nothing else.

Couple of years ago.  One of memsec's perms in the Peak District.
Right! What's next?

Ooooh. That sounds like a daft idea.  I am in!

Chain's a bit slack ;)
That's deliberate to allow for cold weather contraction.  :P

February this year, over the back of Rottingdean. One of those rides that, half-way-through, leads one to think: "What a bloody stupid idea, I've got miles to get back home."

Certainly never seen cycling south of Sussex

Your blog inspired me more than anything else, for your whole trip away Deano.  Not just the snowy bits.  I actually miss it!

This blog post also inspired me, and I make no apology for plugging my bessy mate's blog because he takes a mean photo.  It makes me want to get out there.
