Front pannier direction

I've got a set of quite old Super C universal / front panniers, the smaller ones , with a pocket  on the front ( or back) not on the side, so earlier ones. When mounting them on the 'Front' rack, do the pockets stick out the front, and catch all the rain, or stick out the back and risk catching a peddle. I've googled but drawn a blank.

Ah, a philosophical question.

I suppose the sensible answer would depend on whether their contents prefers being kicked or thwacked by undergrowth and rained on...

A quick look back to 1992 and we seemed to go for pockets at the front. Must have been a conscious decision, but can't recall why now :-\

This calls for wind tunnel tests.

My panniers like that are long gone but when mounted on the front I had to have the pockets forward to avoid kicking them (on an ancient Galaxy)

Amazing - we had coffee in the bar just to the right of the boat's mast about 5 years ago.

I'd go pockets on the back.
They are unlikely to be closer to toe impact than the wheel/mudguard, and access to the contents without dismounting would be easier.

There is a danger that if you put them the wrong way round, you will start pedalling backwards and steering in reverse.

Just like we did as kids sitting on the handlebars facing backwards riding our Triang fixed wheel trikes ;D
