Recommend me some liner gloves
« on: 17 October, 2023, 05:15:05 pm »
The thin lightweight liner gloves I bought ten years ago in Canada finally acquired more holes than there is fabric so they are to be honourably retired. Google can’t find anything with the same brand name.

They went perfectly inside my Pearl Izumi windproof gloves.

Any recommendations for a replacement pair?

There are usually silk gloves advertised on ebay - obviously imitation silk but I've found them pretty good inside Sealskin gloves

I bought a pair of Ron Hill running gloves. If your local running/sports shop stocks them you are able to try them and assess the thinness (if that's a word) before purchase. I think that they are a real help when the weather gets very cold. Also great in Spring/Autumn when you need then early morning etc. worn on there own.

I've a few pairs of these which I can switch mid ride etc so when they are damp I have dry warm ones to use.

Whatever your nearest motorcycle dealer is selling at £5.00 a pair.

Mmmmm? My 'Jasmine' eBay "silk" gloves (when they were £4.50 a pair) fell apart in under 2 months.

Perhaps my glove drawer has bugs? The cheap merino PlanetX short sleeved tee shirt drawer below certainly saw holes appearing as you looked at them

I use Rab Merino liners. I think they are part of the meco line.

I find the Decathlon liner gloves offering good enough. Merino or silk, both fine. They have a different material on the fingertips for a touchscreen. Unlike my Icebreaker liner gloves, which have done the same thing by wearing holes at the fingertips...

Decathlon do silk liners fairly inexpensively: https://www.decathlon.co.uk/p/adult-mountain-trekking-silk-liner-gloves-mt-500-black/_/R-p-14734

I've got an older version, as well as some merino ones (https://www.decathlon.co.uk/p/adult-mountain-trekking-merino-wool-liner-gloves-mt500/_/R-p-311676) - haven't tried the latter yet, as I bought them last week on a whim.

Heheh, must be the touchscreen fingertips!   ;D they are good though, I find the Decathlon liner gloves keep my hands warmer than the equivalent Icebreaker ones.

My Rab meco liner gloves are thin enough touch screens still work.

I had a look on the Rab site, it looks like they may have discontinued the meco line.

I have a Rab meco t-shirt (baselayer). It is neither as warm nor as breathable as pure merino, though possibly it's longer lasting. The meco is just another form of cellulose-fibre.

I have various meco base layers. It's a blend of merino and polyester. The idea being the smell resistance of merino with he quick dry of merino. It's worked well for me but the durability has been an issue. I've had to repair a few of them after getting caught in zips etc... The 120 short sleep base layer I've worn so much it's becoming transparent.

I am a big fan of merino tho. Am currently wearing a t-shirt from devold (a Norwegian brand). Soo comfy. And can wear for days without smelling.

But we digress. The gloves I use as liner gloves are the Rab meco gloves and the newer Rab forge gloves (I have 2 of the former and 1 of he later). They are great.

I have jasmine silk liner gloves and love them. I have replaced a pair but that was because one of the gloves ran away in the summer with a sock.
I also have a skull cap thing. Both work well.

Yes, I find that losing gloves (usually the right hand) is the normal form of attrition.

The socks wear out a bit more quickly.

(Silk liners are excellent for summer touring as lightweight insurance against unseasonal cold.)

I have the Rab's due to QG's recommendation.  They last me about a year until they develop holes in the fingertips (your nails may vary), so about as long as pure merino liners.

QG, cheers for the prompt on Devold - I recently realised that my merino base layers are 8+ years old (hence the holes in the elbows) and ibex what I used to buy from have started cutting their wool with poly.

That's quite good going. I've never had a pair last through the winter, though that's probably because with fingerless gloves they're half outers.

As for being able to use a touchscreen (and just as importantly to me, work an iPod Shuffle with tactile controls rendered untactile when glove material is too thick), I've decided to sacrifice an index finger and thumb.
