Canti brake pad toe setting...
« on: 26 October, 2023, 09:43:40 am »
It's been a while, & now time to replace a couple of Kool Stop Eagle 2 smooth post (salmon) canti pads.  They have the angled tip at rear.  Do I just press the brakes pad to the rim, and the toe is 'automatic' because as the rear tip wears down, the front end of the pad is angled in to the rim slightly relative to the rest of the pad length?

Thoughts / tips?

The angled rear tip set the toe in automatically, as you guess. After the angled tip wears flat with the rest of the pad, the asymmetric position of the post applies differential pressure over the pad, which is intended to produce the same quieting effect as toe in.

Yes, in principle the contoured surface of the pad is designed to 'automatically' optimise its angle. In practice the ideal angle is a result of multiple variables (including the torsional stiffness of the stays or forks to which the brake is attached) and so may require further tweaking.
