Re:  Self assessment.

Firstly, I'm NOT even trying to drum up business here.

Everybody should learn how to calculate their income tax and national insurance.   It's not overly difficult but it can make a big difference to you financially and helps you avoid the shocks of demands from HMRC who don't seem to know how to do the numbers!

If you're on PAYE it should be relatively straightforward even if you have a company car or heath insurance thrown in as each has a tax adjustment amount which probably shows up each month on your payslip.   Also, beware the new child benefit trap for the higher earners here.

If you are self-employed you should be tracking it carefully anyway and avoiding 'peak' weeks or months where you shell out a shedload of ni only to have barren weeks later on which would have helped balance the outlay.   We advise clients to pay themselves a fixed income of £140p/w to kick in government ni contributions but to avoid paying them themselves.   Depending upon whether you are limited or not will then determine how you supplement your income and how the tax and ni gets applied.   For limiteds of course, it doesn't!

It's your hard-earned money - you ought to want to legally make the most of it IMO.    ;)

& Director's dividends are no longer restricted to being paid only annually but ensure that your year-end profits are sufficient to justify interim dividends.

I finally realised that there is something good about going grey. It reflects the sunlight better than my previous dark brown mop and my head doesn't get so hot.

Four weeks ago today I had to postpone a YACF trip to a coffee roastery for an interview. Since then, I have heard bugger all and assumed the worst. Today, I got a letter calling me in for a second interview next Wednesday. The only fly in the ointment is that I can't remember exactly what the job entailed! I'll call tomorrow for a job description. Coventry-based, so cycle-commutable.

I have finally got a printer in my office. It's only taken three months and it means that I no longer have to run down two flighs of stairs to pick up my printing.

It's arrived just in time for my departure...

Went to Sainsburys on the hack bike.
Came out with shopping in 'very' hack] pannier and then went down to Lloyds to pay some cheques in the cash machine.
Can't find wallet. Damn, wonder if I left it by the self-check-out?
Fumble in bag, can't find wallet, then a lad comes down on his BMX [knees up to his chin]
"You dropped this mate, just back there", and hands me back my wallet.
Turns round to cycle back to his mates, "here, hold on a minute".
Quickly open wallet and give him a fiver *
'No, it's alright'
"Here, take it."
"Ok, thanks."

Pay cheques in.
Look back and see him talking to his mates.
Cycle back and thanked him again.
Saved me a whole lot of messing about.

Much metta to him.

[*On reflection I wish I'd have given him a tenner...but there you go]

My BiL and SiL have managed to get a passport for their son - so now they won't have to risk using some dodgy temporary ID to get him through control when they visit us next week!
