Nine years ago, my 15-year-old daughter was a wild, self-destructive, drop out. She has a few GSCEs but no A levels.... but eventually scraped into Uni via a foundation year.

She's was accepted onto a (paid) Biochemistry PhD course this week.

Moral: never give up on them.

As the father of a 16 yr old who is talking about quitting his A levels, I shall take heart from this one. Thanks

I didn't do A levels and look how I turned out!   ;)

A few years in a religious order might sort him out....  ;D

I too didn't do A levels. It has not allowed me to turn to crime or become a social misfit.
I raised two resonsible offspring & paid taxes to the exchequer. The only serious vice I have is an interest in audax.

Having said that,if I could do it all again I would do the A levels:I'm certain the path thru' life would have been a little smoother for having them.

Someone close won their appeal for their Incapacity Benefit. In actual fact, they didn't even need to appeal. DWP said "Ah... we fucked up - have all the money we owe you."

Result!

Now you can get your treatment without worry about suspended benefits.

Showed my big boss some screens I've built to show our application could be put on a mobile browser expecting to be told "very nice, now get on with some work". Instead he was excited and I've got the go-ahead to get a summer intern to build a proper prototype :)

I'm having a day off  :smug:, and while I won't cycle cos it's too bloody windy, it is very sunny and I am getting heaps of washing dried outside!
Yes, I know I am sad, but it's so good when The Igloo stops looking like a chinese laundry  :D

And the plasterer came early so I can go and have a mooch round the shops once I've finished lunch and evicted the cat from my lap.

Just had a great final lecture with the final year students. As they are supposed to be honours students this tends to be less 'stand up and talk' than inviting them to suggest how problems could be solved and discussing those suggestions. 1 hour lecture morphed into a 2.5 hour discussion with the half dozen who decided to stay behind.  So good to see the transition from smart schoolkid to competent independent and passionate thinkers/scientists.

I fail to see how posessing a large container of snot coloured, revolting legumes can be described as 'Good News'...

Peli broke one of my fancy pint glasses from a random beer festival I have been at today. This gives me a very good reason to go to a beer festival, when is the next one ? :)

There was once an article in the local paper about a man who was evicted because of the huge number of beer glasses in his flat. They said it was structurally overloading the flat and posing a danger to the people on the floor below.  :)  :-\

It was a real live person, and there is even a club of beer glass collectors. This was in a town called Kielce in Poland where I lived many years ago.

I must get around to reading The Third Policeman one day. I've seen it converted into a play, but never read it.  :(
