Title: 2016 World Champs
Post by: mattc on 17 October, 2016, 06:48:33 pm
[Brief summary:
- Womens race; boring, popular surprise winner
- Mens race; boring apart from a few minutes as echelons formed about 160km out, and the last km. Popular unsurprising winner.
- Other races: I have no idea.

Does anyone know why the 2015 world champs weren't wearing their stripes in the weekend's road races? I tried wiki and the UCI site, but couldn't find the answer. (wiki says that a WC MUST wear the stripes or be fined!)

Nearly forgot the other non-boring bit:

If they cross the line in any position other than first (which is more common than not) then they are riding illegally and will be fined. The rules do state that you don't wear the stripes for the WC race.

In this case P.Sagan would be fine, but Lizzie would have been fined.

P Sagan: Can I say "crazy" now?

Still waiting for the full report, Mr L.

Thanks. the UCI page about the stripes doesn't mention this, but it's not a "Rules" page, just a Public Waffle page.

(Is the rest of your post meant to be serious?!? )

Looking back, it was a lot easier to follow the race with team members wearing pretty much identical kit for a change.

The other thing that made it easier was an absence of Mr H. Porter in the commentary seat. But why no helicopter out on course? Too much sand?

Well, it is the logicla extension. If you haven't won the race then you are not WC. If you are not WC then you shouldn't be wearing the stripes.

But yes, you don't wear the jersey in the race for the jersey. There is no leader in a one day race.

You will wait in vain, coz I didn't see it, coz I didn't know it was on until I'd sort-of read various posts on Facething in Italian.

I watched it on BBC Red Button. Fortunately, I had some paint drying at the time. Which was more interesting.

For me, logic says you are still the WC until the official result is declared. And I think it would be nice for the defending champion to be highly visible in some way.

But my logic is irrelevant, if the rules say something different!

Your logic is wrong. There cannot be two world champions for a single event during a single day. The duration of a world championship is measured in days, not minutes or seconds.

Why not?

Remind me how many champions there have been in 2016.

You are world champion until the start of the next world championship race. From the point the race starts until the winner crosses the line there is no world champion.

Why?

Because it's always been that way and cycling has traditions

... is the right answer.

(but people arguing that it is "logical" are not going to persuade me :) )

Because your particular form of logic is wrong.

The men's road race was better than expected because of the way the Belgium team rode, and it was entertaining watching Debusschere and Keisse shut down every single attempt by riders, esp. the Germans, to form a chase group.

From a British point of view it's a shame Cav lost out in the sprint, but cannot complain at Sagan doing the double.
