Title: [LEL17] The ACME LEL Peloton Thread [All Welcome!]
Post by: Tomsk on 17 December, 2016, 07:54:58 am
In my role as Elder Statesman/Captain Sensible...perhaps we need a meeting to decide on a start time for the Peloton? The start time allocation system, as I understand it, will swing into gear as entries are taken in January, so will need co-ordinating soon. I'd prefer a face-to-face meeting rather than a long drawn-out discussion here.

Might I suggest a 'pubinar' at the Compasses LG, sometime in the no-mans-land between Christmas and New Year. Wednesday 27th? Or another day that week, or the following Weds [4th January]? I could even produce some sort of schedule based on past LELs, having done an early start as well as a mid-afternoon one.

I asked on Facebook about start times (given I am yet to get a place  ) and they can be concluded in February as I understand it...

I'm away between Xmas & NY, but I'll be around the 4th.

I like the idea of "pubinars". Is this something else we've invented?

Pubinar sounds good.  The Straggler wants to join the peloton as well.

No need to indicate your preferred start time at time of entry (in fact you won't be able to at that point). In Jan it's just about getting your place and paying us. You'll be able to indicate preferred start times and teams from when we open up the rider area of the website. That will be in February. You'll be able to change your mind on preferred start and team name right up until we lock it ahead of allocating starts. No date on when we will lock it, but you'll have a number of weeks till at least end of April I'd expect. Don't let that stop your pubinars mind  ;D ;D

Here's the LEL news article on start times to aid your discussions

Yes, we don't want to pass up the opportunity for quality pub time  ;D

I think we should have some sort of [whispers]...LEL forward planning, if only to put off talking about Easter Arrows for a bit longer!

Yep - the straggler will be keen to attend on Wed 27th Dec or 4th Jan for briefing.  Wonder if Tomsk will organise a 2017 LEL seminar similar to 2015 PBP. I regret I missed an opprtunity in gaining some valuable pre-ride knowledge/tips.

I'm in. Even though start times don't need to be set until later, I would appreciate the knowledge sharing opportunity.

Wed 28th would be easier for me to make, but happy to attend on 4th if that's when the majority are available.

Every peloton needs someone on the back hanging on for grim death - so count me in.  I'm unlikely to be able to make it to the pubinar on either of the suggested dates but will be happy to fit in with whatever is agreed upon.

I see that forward planning has earmarked Witham pubs for Wednesday 18th January. London train-assist friendly. A possible date for an ACME LEL pubinar?

If you want to ride in a group of more than, say, four people, you will be very unlikely to bag an early start time. If you gamble and apply for one, you're very likely to end up with a very late start time.

Title: Re: The ACME LEL Peloton Thread [All Welcome!]
Post by: Tomsk on 04 January, 2017, 01:32:57 pm
Thanks Alwyn...food for thought. My preferred option would be a late start anyway, but I may need to do some persuading.
Title: Re: The ACME LEL Peloton Thread [All Welcome!]
Post by: Phil W on 04 January, 2017, 04:45:45 pm
You can of course choose smaller pelotons of 2 or 3 in which case the odds are better.  You'll be able to see what the rough chances are when you choose your start times as we will show demand vs. available places for each available start.  If demand is less than available places for the start slot you go for as a team then you'll get that slot.  Anything where demand is greater than available places for a start slot then you will be thrown into our infinite probability machine with a good cup of tea.
Title: Re: The ACME LEL Peloton Thread [All Welcome!]
Post by: redfalo on 04 January, 2017, 09:27:43 pm
I'm really in two minds about the start time. The arguments in favour of a late start are:

- unlike on PBP, no need to ride yourself to the limit over the first 400 to 500 km, as intermediate control times don't really matter and time limit is more generous anyway.

- for me, 3pm start time may mean arrving at Louth (242 km) at around 3am in the morning, which is an ideal time for maybe 3 to 4 hours of kip, and the control should not be too busy, as most people will crack on.

- have a lie in on Sunday

- even with a morning start, I would not dare to ride further than Thirsk without sleep, where I may arrive between 4am and 6am in the morning. I expect Pocklington and Thirsk to be absolutely packed in first night, as both are the natural first sleep stop, so high probability of an unpleasant night.

Key arguments against late start may be:

- one is deliberately behind the bulge, which requires a lot trust into alwyn's organisatinal skills, as there is a risk controls may run out of food.

- one may catch up with  the tail end of the bulge at  a later stage. (My overall speed on PBP was 14.3 kph, and I was feeling better on the last 200 than after 400, so would be hoping to complete  LEL in around 100 hours). Running into the bulge from behind could mean experiencing pandemonium at the controls

- on PBP, I started at 6.15pm and always was a few hours ahead of the buldge, which was really good. I left a couple of controls after some sleep, which were in the meantime hit by the bulge, and there was absolute pandemonium

- I struggle to get to sleep on long rides, unless I'm really tired. So sleeping at Louth may be nice in theory but could not work out in reality.

- at the end of the field, on the way back, intermediate control times can in theory become an issue, as the controls do physically close at some point. hence slightly higher risk of DNF/OOT finish if some issues arise in between

In 2013 Pocklington was the only first night honeypot. Thirsk was quiet and Market Rasen was dead. By spreading out the start times, and not front loading the start with a mixed-ability group, I hope to spread the load between Louth, Pocklington and Thirsk.

Being brutally candid here, my biggest worry is actually Louth. It's a relatively small control and I'm not fully confident the school realise yet what they're in for. I'm meeting them next month for a planning meeting which will hopefully put my mind at rest, and I may yet look for some overflow space somewhere nearby. But the controller is an old hand at this and the school are very keen to make it work.

At Pocklington I've booked a leisure centre in town, bang on the route, as overflow dormitory space. So things should be easier there on the first night.

Thirsk is a big control and never really gets truly busy because of where it is on the route. Ditto Barnard Castle.

In 2009 there was a 2pm start time, and I did a control at Thorne, ie Louth. Sue and Keith did Washingborough ie Spalding. We were all surprised at how quickly both controls filled up with people sleeping. Folk who had been on the road for 9 hours were getting 5-6 hours sleep. Personally I'm all for this; sleeping is good. Folk absolutely shouldn't feel compelled to skip a night's sleep to avoid being late to early controls. So we're taking a pragmatic approach to intermediate control times on the way up.

  alwyn and redfalo, wise thoughts and more to digest. Extra highlighters and a bigger flip-chart needed for the pubinar!

I've always been surprised at how many want to sleep on the first night of PBP/LEL - it's all too exciting for me to stop then! I'm confident the new start arrangements will spread things out more: on the afternoon start in 2009, it did me a power of good to catch morning starters in Yorkshire, without feeling I was pushing hard to catch up*. I knew I had plenty of time in hand for sleep and could stop early on the second night, [before the control got too busy - on awaking there were bodies everywhere] which set me up for the hilly northern days.

* There was a significant tailwind...

Really good food for thoughts, thanks for sharing your thoughts, alwyn!

So far, I had assumed that Louth would be a relatively unpopular stop for sleeping on the way out, at it is only 242 km from London and most people starting on the normal time limit would be keen to crack on.

Like Tomsk, I was surprised that some riders took roadside naps in the first night of PBP. However, my impression was that they were a small minority while most people put up with riding through the first night.

In 2005, loads stopped at Thorne on the first night [only a morning start that time, but also a Thorne start for northerners] - and though only a handful left around the time Pip and I did, a fair sized peloton formed to push on through a glorious warm night, after we were held up by level-crossing gate repairs at Howden.

The only queue for food I recall was at Kirton on the first day. That was nowhere near the size of anything what we saw at PBP (and yes I was generally  ahead of the bulge as well). Not having to pay for food during the event makes a big difference to the queues.

I think Louth will be a popular choice for afternoon starts.   While you can push on, with the lower minimum speed and the fact it is even across the whole ride, you have more time for rest in the first 24 hours than PBP.  Afternoon start, finish the last bit of the Fens in the dark, rest at Louth, then cover the Wolds in daylight.  I wouldn't get fixated about when or where you sleep and remain flexible on that point. We had a stonking Fens tailwind in 2013, what will this year bring?

In 2013 Danial described Pocklington as "under siege" on the first night. So I stopped early at Market Rasen (great advice Danial!), had the dorm almost to myself, then rode on through the early hours passing bodies in silver bags to Pocklington.

I'm in for the afternoon start. I think riding through the Sunday night (with maybe a short sleep some time Monday morning) will work well for me.

Like PBP I am not going to make too many plans, I'll make a rough note of how far the controls are apart so I know if I want to carry on to the next one but having a plan involves too much thinking on the bike for my liking. I just want it to be about riding and enjoying, much like PBP was*

*holding Tomsks wheel for pretty much all of PBP was helpful  ;D

Us too... after starting at the last bar one start time (10.15 I think) we were told that if we wanted a bed stay at Market Rasen - so we actually stopped around 9.30 pm, then left again in the small hours to catch dawn at the Humber Bridge. The seige conditions at Pocklington were still in evidence when we stopped for a second breakfast and overtook many of the riders who had "slept" there.

For us slower riders, one advantage of starting early is that there's almost always some company along the road, even if it's from later starters catching up and overtaking.  Starting late and riding full value can be a lonely experience over 1400km.  Based on my ride in 2009, I wouldn't expect to sleep before Alston so would be aiming for a start time that would get me there about an hour before sunset, at my very casual pace.

Hi all,

I'd enjoy riding with some of you ACME folk if you'll have me. I probably won't be able make any pubinars though.

Just starting to think about knock-on effects of start times etc. A bit mind-blowing over that distance!

I'm in too now.

I am going to start at some stage. Not sure it will make a lot of difference when really, just gotta roll with it. Tippers is generally right about this kind of thing.

I am going to concentrate on getting fit enough and tough enough to ride for 36 hours on naps just in case and let the ride take it's course from there. I am not going to do what I did on PBP (dawdle and not eat enough). For me the prospect of failing another 1000k+ ride is just too awful to contemplate, so I have to make this one! I think that will count for a lot...

I am planning to get there a bit early and have something to eat before the serious fun starts, so I can try to locate a suitable area if I know roughly how many are turning up. Anyone else arriving early as it would be easiest to "reserve" lots of seats if there are 2 or 3 of us to occupy the space.

Are you using Refalo's route out? Any idea what time you are likely to leave and be heading past Canary Wharf(ish)? I am thinking about bringing the bike in to work and if I can get a chaperone for my first ride out of London I might ride all the way to Witham.

Indeed. As much as I like the idea of riding out, I won't do it. I can only leave office after 5pm, which would make being in Witham by 8 a stretch even at best of times. In mid-January, with temperatures at around zero, and the prospect of getting a  lift by @Redlight is just too tempting.

Will anyone have a laptop with them? (I will but it's likely to be my work one which has a battery life equal to a gnat's attention span) If so it might be interesting to look at the position grapher that Jo Wood did for LEL2013. I know things will be a bit different this time with more widely spaced start times, but it's still fun to watch.
You can find it here http://www.staff.city.ac.uk/~jwo/lel2013/

I echo jiberjaber's thanks. It was an informative evening.

My goal to determine the start time and how an ACME peleton (s) might work weren't achieved. I got a feel for 2 schools of thought re start times.

Appreciate that some group riding over the coming months will help inform what people plan to do on LEL, but if we're on different start times that might become somewhat difficult. What do other's think?

It was an excellent planning meeting, thank you to all the contributors.  I am still not sure whether I am happier with a plan or without.  Having a plan makes it all seem a bit more difficult than just turning up and riding your bike until the end.  Then again, if it avoids discovering that you are 80k from the next control and not 50k as you thought  in the middle of the night in the middle of France then that might be a good thing.

It looks like the ACME peloton might have a natural split between a 2pm group and a 4pm group.  This will probably make it easier to bag the right time slots as well.  The Arrow offers an ideal opportunity to ride in similar groups - most of us know which people we are comfortable riding with, but it is always difficult to stay together over long distances.

I would guess that Psyclist falls into the faster ACME Dynamite group which is aiming for a 4pm start and a long burst up to Thirsk (or probably Edinburgh if Tomsk is at the front  :o).  The ACME Anvil group will most likely go with a similar strategy but from the earlier start time.  The Anvil group so far comprises; me, Carlos, the Straggler and Bobb and the Dynamite group; Tomsk, Jiber, Tippers and Psyclist.  There is plenty of time to finesse arrangements and we will all end up seeing each other on the road anyway.

I too gathered some practical and helpful information from past LEL riders experiences (much appreciated!), especially remembering to clearly mark my identification to my belongings at the sleep controls. Managed to get team name agreed 'Acme Anvils' sailing under Admiral Ted.

Still undecided upon favourable start time for full value pace. Further discussions required.

The evening's only disappointment was my amazingly stringy steak at the 'spoons. However, this was more than compensated by the rich intellectual food for thought, and the nice war tales by LEL veterans.

The biggest takeaway for me was to prepare for a roller coaster in terms of temperatures. While I had read about the cold and the heat  before, it does make a difference if you hear several first hand accounts on that. I will also think about a unique marking for my shoes.

Thanks a lot to everyone, and particularly to @redlight for giving me a lift.

You'll get a tag with your rider number for attaching to your bag drop.  Remembering where you put your shoes can be interesting, bright cord to thread through the shoes whilst you sleep can be effective.  Also think about how you're going to remember where your bag drops are. If you're tired you might forget.

If only you had friends who could send you a text using a Modern Mobile Telephony Equipment. Perhaps someone who was riding the actual event, perhaps?

Or even me.

That week, after helping at the start, I'll be relaxed after a decent lunch, sitting in a warm, comfy air-conditioned office in London, wishing with every fibre of my being that I was exhausted, barely able to stand up or pedal, drenched and freezing cold in a Scottish rainstorm miles from any shelter, high up in some god-forsaken hills somewhere ghastly.

Funny old thing, life.

Nice to have some ACME folk around, will make a difference to see some known faces on the way. I give all ACME riders permission to slap me around the face with a wet haddock and tell me to snap out of it, or get on with it, or say 'just do one more control'.

Given your speed, I suspect we'll need to rely on you having long sleeps ... at least to meet up with the 4pm starters.

Mind you, I may drop back from the peleton over the flat sections as my pace is not so good until it gets hilly. Then once it gets hilly, I'm also slow!

The remnants of the ACME Anvils train (ie the Straggler and Carlos Fandango both OTP) are leaving at 2 and planning that sort of strategy.  Neither of them are known faffers so they will doubtless fly through the controls.   You would have to put up with Carlos overnight though and he does moan a lot, mainly because he travels so light (a pack of 3 and some sudocreme) that he is cold and miserable when it gets dark.

23kph was mentioned at the pub last night: about standard for Arrows and such like. Even with a tailwind, I'd be aiming to keep the speed down on the flatlands up as far as Yorkshire. I'd like to enjoy, not endure the hills, while trying to recover from an adrenaline/testosterone fuelled thrash.

On the other hand, 30kph through the controls would be good, or at least until we decide there's enough time in hand for more sleep and maybe a leisurely pub/cafe stop somewhere, or more relaxed visit to controls.

I`ve a very clever strategy to avoid becoming miserable and cold and apparently moany overnight. This involves not riding overnight. Genius I think.

There seems to be ample time to manage a decent sleep overnight, 2 or 3 hours slumber in a control followed by 2 or 3 hours kip in the next control if needed.

I have puchased a framebag for my sudocreme and pack of 3, it`s still pretty empty, no idea what else to put in it. I`ll probably be wearing a gilet but I haven`t any buffs, either thin or thick, arm warmers, knee warmers, leg warmers or shoe covers to put in it. Any ideas?

The Straggler is so ice cold he wears every item of cycling clothing he possesses at all times (I do hope that he doesn`t flaunt that embarrassing CCS rag though) and of course, social media is beneath his lofty ideals, so between us we hope to achieve minimal faffage and a stress free ride!

If everything goes to plan on LEL, I'm planning on stopping for a pint before the finish. Looking at the route, I'm thinking of stopping at the White Hart in Moreton, have been there before on the Dunwich Dynamo.

Any thoughts from you local riders? Do other LEL riders stop for a pint before finish?

Yes, 'cos once you've finished you'll probably just want to go home & sleep, not necessarily in that order...

The Green Man, on the right in Toot Hill is a good pub too btw & much nearer the arrivee - depends on timing of course.

Just looking at the route and where to break the first 100km leg to St Ives - somewhere around Barley would be about half way. There's a 24-hour Esso garage at Flint Cross on the A505 which has a shop, but not much hope generally for village shops on a Sunday evening.

I'll be carrying a bit of food just in case...

Having ridden much of that first leg a couple of weeks ago, I can contest to much of it being picturesque but lacking in facilities. There was a 10km stretch on a B-road between Barley and another place beginning with a B that was rather mundane, but otherwise the first leg should be rather pleasant.

I shall pack something to eat, saving garage delights until later in the ride.

We'll see you all in Brampton. If you plan to sleep there please be kind to your wake up service as it might be me.

I'm arriving just before 2pm. I plan to eat after then, but will have eaten an early lunch at home.

Can we have a summary of which ACME folks made it and who didn't?  I have been following progress on Facebook but I haven't got a complete picture.

We lost Nim - this means he has to do the Flatlands for his Essex SR

Did you visit the St Ives 'spoons? I had a European peloton with me and didn't get the chance to.

I enjoyed and benefited hugely from riding with the ACME crew on and off for the four and a bit days. Very grateful for the opportunity to do so. I learned a lot. Thanks to all. Not sure how to post videos to the board so here is a link to a short one of some of the ACME riders on the Fens - http://www.monaxle.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/P1040440.mp4?_=1

I did indeed - properly tough going, but great fun as well, can't heap enough praise on the superb organisation and brilliant volunteers! Apologies to the various people I spoke with at the arrivee after finishing - I very much doubt I was making any sense. A power nap followed by a few coffees certainly helped.

@alotronic - I'm Nim 'on here'. I got your message through my website contact form.

I said this to the ACME folk I talked to at Loughton when I collected my drop bags, but congratulations and chapeau to you all on an awesome achievement completing LEL.

As Tomsk says up-thread I need the Flatlands 600 to complete my Essex SR. Last year that ride collapsed into type 2 fun within the first 200 km. This year I'm better prepared and knowing the route, rather looking forward to the Spoons breakfasts, Goole McDonalds, audax hotels...

Me too  ::-)

Can I politely request the ACME peloton helps me clear up after breakfast and leaves late [typically takes about 30 minutes to do] - I'll of course mark your card as a late start and tack the extra time onto the end if you need it. It does mean the crowds at Red Lodge will have dispersed by the time we arrive and we'll have a quicker passage.

Enjoy.   Having skipped 2016, I'll be back this year on 79".

I've only just finished re-building the bike so it will get a shakedown on the R&R this weekend.    I do wonder if I should relocate the family north of London, but I think 'so Daddy can ride his bike more' is not a valid reason.

Aha! Cheers! And just got your email too. I am seriously considering flatlands but it will not be fixed... that way madness lies. Last year the damp and the ahem bits did not get on too well.

Happy to be part of the registration and tidy up crew Tomsk.

I can't quite believe that anyone who LELed would want to see that route again for years, but here we all are. Short memory.

Randonesia is in full swing and it's a different route through the Fens anyway  I'm thinking of trying it with the Day One set up in Go Faster mode (for me anyway) with 78" Gear, Aerobars and the Koala for luggage. If you see someone walking on Sunday it will probably be me.

All good on leaving a bit later Tomsk.

First it was llamas now koalas. I didn't know ACME was going into the zoo business.
