Average Blood Pressure?
« on: 06 June, 2008, 09:56:43 am »
At a check-up at the doctor's last night, the doctor took my blood pressure and said it was "disgustingly healthy" (at this point, I thought I'd better not mention the amount of coffee I'd drunk that day). I asked her what it was, and she said it was "Ninety over fifty", but the numbers mean very little to me.

Anyway, I wondered what sort of blood pressure would be average for a female of my age (late twenties), but the internet's terribly unclear, and the best I could find was this chart, which actually implies that I have low blood pressure, which can't be right, as the doctor wouldn't have called me "disgustingly healthy" if that was the case.

So I was wondering what sort of blood pressures the fit and healthy cyclists here were sporting so that I could make more sense of the numbers the doctor said.

115/75 last time I had it checked.

Just like resting heart rate, there is no "perfect" value as it depends too much on the individual.

Just take the "disgustingly healthy" compliment and be happy.

90/50 is at the lower end of the healthy range (which is admittedly quite a wide range).

What really pisses my doctors off is that my blood pressure is relatively low (about 105/70) for a fat bugger who drinks, smokes and imbibes caffeine like it's going out of fashion.  They warn me about my blood pressure, then take it, and mumble under their breath...

'Tis wonderful having naturally low blood pressure (runs in the family) although it does tend to give anaethetists a bit of a fright - so I do warn them before surgery.

You'll notice that 90/60 is marked as "Althletes, Children = Normal"

last year before PBP it was 120/70
But after 3 months with no cycling, weight gain  and plenty of stress it went up to 140/90  :(
presently it's  135/80  :-\

So what do the numbers actually mean?

Systolic (the higher number) is the pressure when the heart contracts.  Diastolic (the lower number) is the pressure when the heart relaxes.

I went to EvilNurse for my jab on Monday.  EvilNurse and I do not get on.  Quite apart from the original spat we had, she has also told me that it's "impossible" to cycle 200km in a day and accused me of lying about how much exercise I do, and then told me that if I keep cycling I will get osteoporosis.  I wonder how she qualified, but there you go.

On Monday EvilNurse weighed me and did the blood pressure routine; my blood pressure is 102/65 which is almost exactly on the line of 'low' or 'normal for athletes & children.'  This is A Good Thing, especially since I have a family history of hypertension.

This did not make EvilNurse happy.  She far prefers it when I sprint in late with my heart rate going like the clappers, especially if I've managed to put on a kilo or so.  ::-)

Blood pressure is the force the blood exerts on the walls of the blood vessels.  Systemic arterial BP comes from the blood being discharged by the left ventricle into the full aorta.

When the heart is resting after ejection of blood, the pressure in the arteries is the diastolic BP.

The difference between the two is the pulse pressure.

Bear in mind that BP is affected by time of day, posture, sex.

Mine is normally around 90/50 but this also means I suffer in hot baths.

Funnily enough we were playing with a blood pressure monitor at the weekend, one of the wrap round your arm and pump types - not, I'm told, terribly accurate. My average was around 105/60 which seems to be on the low side for someone of my age.

People who do no exercise cannot comprehend what goes on with people who do.

When I first went to the rheumatology specialist in Southend hospital, we talked about exercise. This was before I had taken up cycling again. I was doing a fair bit of walking, well in excess of the Government recommended 10000 paces per day.

To me, a moderate walk is 5 miles and takes me a little over 2 hours on the flat and in good weather. After 8 miles it becomes long-ish, 10 miles is a long walk. My son in law would disagree, but he's a maniac who walked from JoG to Land's End, some days covering more than 30 miles.

The rheumatologist told me that 2 miles should be adequate - which is about what I do every morning with the dog when we go to the park. Totally inadequate if you want to do a proper day's walking. Last week, almost 3 years later, we climbed Cader Idris. Not the most challenging of peaks, being totally non-technical and only about a 6 mile walk from the YH and back, but we did it without a lot of difficulty, apart from the periods in which we couldn't walk but simply had to brace ourselves against the wind. My knees were playing up at the end. That wasn't arthritis, though: it was the tendons at the back of the knee having cushioned my enormous bulk down 2500 feet of descent, and a gentle bike ride the following day sorted them out.

Mine's usually about 105/60 - although once it was 85/50 & the nurse looked at me in a concerned fashion & asked me if I felt OK.  Family history of low blood pressure - occasionally I get the spots-in-front-of-eyes thing when I stand up, although not so often since I've started doing more exercise.

Osteoporosis: I do occasionally worry a bit about this, because AIUI cycling *isn't* good anti-osteoporosis exercise, because it's not weight-bearing.  I'm pretty sure I still walk around more than the average car-driving person, though.

Mine's usually 100/60 - 110/70. I can tell when it's heading towards the lower end because I feel wobbly and get dizzy when I stand up. So I have a packet of crisps. I've put on a lot of weight in recent years and even now at 5 stones overweight it's still 120/80 (last time it was checked) so I think I'm one of the lucky ones who just has low blood pressure.

Strangely enough since I've got much fitter I get this problem more frequently. I put this down to (presumably) having a larger heart and a lower resting heart beat, so the heart takes longer to fire up to speed from a resting situation.

Is that logical you medical people out there?

I put this down to postural hypotension.  I try to stand up carefully, not jump out of bed too fast and avoid hot baths for fear of fainting and making a mess on the floor.

Postural hypotension.  Believe it's fairly common in people who exercise.  I certainly notice it towards the end of the week or after a series of harder than usual rides.  If this article (Why Do I Get Dizzy When I Stand Up?) is to be believed then a lowish pulse rate is also a contributory factor.

For some reason, all three of our kids have been prone to dizziness on standing.

Only, they used to do it deliberately, just for the "rush"  ::-).

Call it - recreational standing...
