God bless subtitles.

Well, written Dutch is OK but spoken a bit tricky, although I can understand some of it as it is similar enough to German.

We had the Fibre Optic chaps digging trenches round here recently and then they had to put something in the house. They are all Dutchies and spoke to me in Dutch and I replied in German and we generally understood each other.

Don’t the Dutch still Dutch subtitles on and leave the spoken dialogue native? They did when I was there some, erm, 40 years ago…. That’s why they all spoke English with a US accent.  Germans of course dubbed their foreign programmes. “Achtung Tonto” said the Lone Ranger.  ;D

A somewhat advance heads up, but it seems the Vuekta highlights will be on Quest rather than the previously advised ITV4 this year. Oh dear, more Wiggins.

The thing I looked at today said ITV4...

Apparently Cycling,co.uk was lying.

I don't mind Wiggins,  it's the deeply exciting Sean Yates I can't stand. I swear the man can do circular breathing, too.

Agreed, but that lot are on Eurosport, not ITV4 (or Quest).

SB Wiggins kept popping up on Quest's Giro highlights show last year, probably to distract attention away from how their colemantary team is light years behind different from *** and Super D.

Quest (and Eurosport I believe, but could be completely wrong (again)) use GCN - and that most assuredly has Wiggins and Kelly, at least for the Giro.

Have been watching Baptiste series 1.  It was ... not bad - but I would not say it was good.  I would probably have excused some of its foibles had it been in foreign, but I found too many issues with it (story plot holes etc) to consider it good.  It's only 6 episodes, so low buy-in cost though.

I stumbled across this entirely by accident (that's the UX paradigm of the Amazon Firestick):

https://www.thetheatrecafe.co.uk/2021/06/ian-mckellen-solo-show-broadcast-amazon-prime-video/

Ian McKellan's 80th birthday tour, streamed on Amazon. It's basically a monologue.
https://www.nationaltheatre.org.uk/shows/ian-mckellen-on-stage

It's very good.

Finding it on the idiot-box is left as an exercise for the reader.
My streaming comes in via an Amazon Firestick, which seems to posses an ever-changing non-deterministic UI.
I can never come to the same place twice in it's labyrinthine passageways.
It's a self-modifying maze.

Thanks for that - sounds interesting.  I found it here, entitled "Great British Theatre" cos it's lumped in with some other productions.  The stage version of Fleabag might also be worth a watch.

I just watched the Fleabag monologue, and it was one of the best things I've seen for years.

"White Lotus" finished here last night and it was very good. Think it started on Sky-somthing in the UK this week.

Brand new series of Richard Osman's House of Games started tonight. Hurrah.

Baptiste series 2 (No, I never learn).  Worse plot holes (in fairness it could be scriptwriters chucking in random twists with no consideration as to logic) than series 1 but it has whatshername from Killing Eve in it, so (some) of the acting is better.

Nicola Walker in Annika last night on Alibi at 2100.
Another cop series but very different to Unforgotten. A little jokey, interesting asides to camera, Scots dialect to attune to and a least three young women similar enough that I was never sure which one I was watching.
My wife thought it marvellous and I'll certainly be watching the rest.

I read the Guardian review of that, it was very tongue in cheek.

So was the programme but she is a good actress and the asides to camera worked.

Great North Run highlights - just finished on BBC2 however it should be available on i-player.  At the superficial level, some  impressive elite running plus a nice programme with lots of remarkable individual stories.  Or alternatively, how much better would our country be if the people in charge followed the example of those charity fundraisers.

And did something active to make life better for those in our community who are ill, vulnerable or need support.  And by doing so, make life better for all of us.

I've been watching some Swedish thing on BBC 4, The Hunt for A Killer. A bit different as it's set it in the late 80's and 90's.

One of my daughters and a son-in-law (not her husband) were running - between them they raised well over £1,000 (shared between Shelter and Macmillan Cancer Support) - very proud of them.

Based on a true tale of poor policing and missed opportunities and a bit slow in the telling. The final two episodes are on iPlayer so we sat up and finished it.
