Postie and mini postie grand tour to Yorkshire.
« on: 25 July, 2019, 09:13:20 pm »
So here we are. Back in the winter sam ( age 10 now) decided he wanted to ride to Yorkshire ( we live on the south coast near Portsmouth) and he would be riding his own bike! Up till now all big tours have been on tandem.

So fast forward 6 months and here we are having completed day one.
Home to migham , 52miles and a few hills on a bloody hot day, ice cream count for the day =2
Even did a couple of miles on the avon and kennett canal to finish the day.

Tomorrow up to middle stoney.

Only 2 ice creams in 52 miles on such a hot day!
Riding a concrete path through the nebulous and chaotic future.

Day 2. A good start today nice ride over to goring -on-thames , a few hills to get there.
Nice cafe in goring- great sausage rolls ( bought a couple for lunch)
The main road around wallingford was fun- sam just got on with it. I worried.
Found a pub for a drink at lunch time, Evan found a ball in the garden for a game of football.
Great little shop about 3 miles from our b+b for ice cream
The b- road to middle stoney was very busy. Again sam rode like someone much older.

47.2 miles today.
Now heading to the pub for dinner.

Off to nothamptonshire tomorrow. .

Day 3 . After a traditional Indian breakfast , last nights digs was run by a indian family.
. Rain for most of the day , didn't seem to bother sam. He smashed out 20miles before we found somewhere to stop ( cafe at canons ashby) a big climb to daventry had sam at his limit but very happy to get to the top!
Late lunch in daventry followed by a dry 8 miles to west haddon , crossing a canal and two great roads the A5 and M1.

37.8 MILES today.

Melton mowbray tomorrow.

Day4. A day from hell, wind and rain from start to finish made for a real horrible day in the saddle sam was a star riding in that, didn't complain once and deserves a medal.
Took a more direct route due to the weather.
Stopped in market harbourgh ( weatherspoons)  for elevens and then a pub about 10miles from melton mowbray,  a half pint of hot chocolate for a sam and a beer for me( that only seemed to come in pints)
Nice hotel tonight and the bikes have been garaged next to a Ferrari! !!

Miles for today=35.7

Rest day tomorrow only 20miles to grantham.

So rest day!! Only 18 miles to grantham and the sun came out.
Sam knocked the 18miles out by lunch time he was flying this morning.
Nice afternoon playing football with the tennis ball we have been carrying,  pool sticks down at the river
And playing pool at a top real ale pub.

Still back to it tomorrow 40 odd miles to do..

Day 6.
Sam suggested his legs might be starting this morning and he did seem a bit sluggish to start but was soon flying again.
Found a nice village shop for elevens and sat under a tree.
Some nice cycle ways took us in to Lincoln ( along the river)for lunch.
Nice climb out of the city got the legs working and on to the b-road to kirton in lindsey ( our afternoon stop) avoiding some heavy showers on the way.
Finally got caught in a heavy shower a mile from our digs.

47miles for the day.

Tomorrow,  humber bridge, hull and Yorkshire!
Last day of planned cycling on the tour.

Day 7 the final day.
Couple of heavy showers first thing, then dry .
Very little traffic on our route to the bridge and a great little bakers in barton upon humber( 2 ice buns,2 cookies and 2 drinks for 4.50)
Sam though the humber bridge was amazing and when i told him he was now in Yorkshire he said" well that went well" a true understatement! !!
The ride through hull was nice and not very busy .
We finished with 265miles for the trip.

I am so proud of sam and the way he cycled the last week.
Now i cant wait for his next challenge.

Freudian - Last time we were in Market Harborough the Weather had certainly got the better of us, I recall sitting in Wetherspoons on the edge of hypothermia.

Sounds like you've had a great trip - well done Sam
