I just read an ad on Facebook Marketplace. It was for a Nespresso Vertuo Plus Titan coffee machine. Reason for it being sold?

What's funny about that? - we have a Nespresso (actually an Aldi one, but the same thing) - I made a custom plywood case for it, with pod storage space, to take when we stay with non-coffee-drinking offspring.

When we were using a Nespresso for our non brown drink needs, we kept our old little Nespresso machine for taking on our holidays.

We’ve not made pprivison for our travels now we’ve transitioned to beans

We currently have 5 (five) electicisits outside our house. The were consternated on their arrival, an obviously somewhat confused as to their job description because the seemed to be testing for gas.

Having knocked on our door, it would seems that we are the last house along our street that still has a supply of electrons, with the rest apparently escaping into the ground outside our drive. Which they now plan to dig up!

Sigh. Yesterday morning the plan was to travel to Edinburgh and then to London. That did eventually happen but mot without some last minute hassle.

Woke up to no power in the upstairs bedroom. Circuit breaker tripped and would not reset. I'd have left it till I got home, but that circuit powers the Skylink kit and network cabinet. It had tripped out at 4am.

Some fault findimg and I have a N-E fault in the fixed wiring. Chased it down to the final run of cable back to the CU. As a temp bodge I've isolated that cable run and the ring is now broken. But the only load is a couple of bedside lamps, a clock, and the network kit. Its operating as  radial till I get back.

Got away after a 2 hour delay.

I like the way he calls his ratchet winch a come-along.

That's what I know them as.
I learnt that name working offshore in the oil industry, so probably an American influence.

The variants which pulled in wire rope were generically called 'tirfors', even if they were not made by that company.

Standard name for them.

I've used ratchet straps, and a high lift jack to move really heavy things.

The gangplank for our mooring was a particular pain, 7m long, made of steel. No idea how much it weighed, but, a lot. No problem with a high lift jack that could lift 3.5 ton through 1.5m.

I have sadly not found his cakes of late to be exceedingly good, not to mention the pack of Almond Slices I ate recently was 50% packaging and the remaining 50% didn't taste dissimilar. I has R&D ideas.

I did once make a joke about cakes to an NT person at the Other Kipling's house in Burwash and she faced me down with a stern look and said I think you will find he was a writer and not a baker. My wife laughed so hard that she had to be removed from the premises and this is why we're on a list.

I've not actually had any of his products for some time so it's no surprise that my memory may not match the reality.

Ha! I think I managed to resist when we visited Batemans but you'd think they would get used to it after a while. Maybe she was new.

She deadpanned it very well regardless. My wife still brings it up. But she once broke into Nymans after being refused entry to buy a drink from their cafe which was clearly visible from the entrance. She emerged brandishing her drink and delivered a thunderous 'ha!' at the man who foolishly decided to insert his opinion between her and her hydration.

She's on far more lists than me. I think they may be creating new lists just for her.

My experience of visiting NT properties is that the volunteers are always rather fuddy-duddy types with no sense of humour.

Their counterparts at English Heritage properties are always a lot more fun.

I don't know if this is reflects a deliberate hiring policy or is to do with the kind of people each organisation attracts but it's too consistently the case to be a coincidence.

In defence of people manning NT attractions (presumed volunteers in most cases) in our experience they have been very good about looking after bags etc when you arrive as a touring cyclist with panniers which you really don't want to lug round a house or even garden. Which is more than I can say about other places, I feel a visit to the grumble thread is in order.
