That is Urquhart castle?

Indeed! no one got my Loch Ness reference so I had to be less subtle!

My Favourites (as a sort of English Scottish expat regular visitor)

East coast
Icecream on the beach at St. Andrews
Picnic at Dunotter castle and a wander around Stonehaven
Dolphin watching at Chanonry Point and dinner at The Anderson, Fortrose
Potter about Cromarty and the Nigg ferry, pictish stones at Nigg Church

Middle
Carbisdale Castle, the poshest Youth hostel ever
Bit touristy, but ospreys at Loch Garten RSPB reserve

West coast
Otter watching on Mull
Iona and boat trip to Staffa
Camp on the beach at Morar, just south of Mallaig
Dinner at the Kilberry Inn, Kintyre Penninsula
Oban, then a Calmac ferry to anywhere (Calmac macaroni cheese and chips)
Outer Hebrides would have a whole list of its own
Sticky toffee pudding at the Uig Hotel on Skye
Do your own rock arrangement at Neist Point, Skye, (watch for whales)

Check the Visit Scotland website for food/music/highland games and festivals.
Undiscovered Scotland website for more details on good stuff to do and accommodation lists.

Have a good holiday,
PG

oh, and get the lass on a bike....I hear tandems are good

Rosslyn Chapel is about 15 miles outside Edinburgh. It's beautiful and fascinating. And the Holy Grail and all of Jesus's children are there, or something.

You can watch the dollfish in Aberdeen harbour (Pingu frequently does on his commute home), but it's not quite as picturesque as Chanonry Point. Less people though.
Do not clench. It only makes it worse.

Broughty Ferry is good for jumpy mamally rivery things too. And there are Pictish Stones just up the road in Meigle.

Come to TAYSIDE, don't bother about anywhere else....plenty to do here, lots of scenery, lots of history, lots of places to go.

From coast to glens to city to mountains...

And if you like Pictish stones (no idea where that came from but it seems to be a theme) come past my house to see the only surviving one with a boat carved on it...I'll even bake a cake  ;)

Macbeths castle as well - a 20 min walk uphill. More castles, hill forts, roman forts, dead railways, smugglers paths, Scotlands oldest cast iron bridge, Burn's wishing well.

What's not to do..

For an effective midge deterent use Avon Skin-so-soft.  Available all over the highlands and from Avon on line or your local agent.  The Royal Marines use it.

The RM are based in Arbroath. There are very few midges in Arbroath. QED

Ah yes, but they spend a lot of time skulking about in the highlands frightening the sheep.

Gerri's Ice Cream parlour at Stenness on mainland Orkney is a wonderful place.   :P

Skin So Soft works. but I think this is because the midges drown in it.

I can also say with experience that Skin SoSoft is useless up Stac Pollaidh if there is a deer herd up there too (which there is often)

Only a YACF Buff was effective.
It is simpler than it looks.

I'm not sure Skin So Soft would work to repel deer  ;)

Anyway, back to Tayside...Arbroath Smokies, Forfar Bridies, Dundee Cake, Dundee Marmalade, Kirriemuir Gingerbread, Starry Rock (Kirrie), Tay Salmon, Perthshire soft fruit...numity num  :P

I also fail to find that Skin So Soft works. When I go to the West coast i wear a ridiculous looking net sack on my head. :(
