one funny thing about the bbc coverage was the title sequence.  There was a funny mixture of famous A list cyclists including Beryl Burton and that american chap.  And someone called "Porter".  Then I realised that one of the commentators was called Porter.  Ego or joke?

It's the World Championships and big Shuggy (Hugh Porter) is a former World Champion. Was that American chap Marty Nothstein ? Not Lance Armstrong surely ? He's won nowt on the track has he ?

From memory the titles included fast eddie, big mig, victoria pendelton, wiggo, lance armstrong, beryl burton, sir chris plus the mysterious mr porter.
If he's a world champ though, fairy nuff!

He's four times World 5000m Pursuit Champion. I tuned it a tad late to see the opening sequence last night, I thought it was odd that they showed some how the Old Mans*  Olympic races. Would be nice to see some Obree and Boardman footage or even Sturgess or Doyle  maybe also. Let the newbies know that we've been actually quite good at this bike racing lark for a long time.

*That's Sir Chris (Old Man of) Hoy

Poor old Hugh Porter ... he was an Olympic pursuit track cyclist in the 1960s - but he married an Olympic swimmer, Anita Lonsborough, who was rather better known than him ... thus he's been (sort of) "Mr Lonsborough" in fame terms ever since

Hugh commentates at Manchester event sometimes and Anita is usually there too.

And finally, the road outside the big sports centre in Wolverhampton is called Hugh Porter Way .... guess where he comes from?!?!

Rob

Edit : perhaps a tad unfair, but he's almost in the same league as Duffers when he's at the mike!

Indeed - A well worn joke is "Do you know the Hugh Porter way?" Insert own punchline...
