Last night, 'last chance to watch' on My5: 'We were Soldiers'

I should have known better. It had Mel 'Sugartits Racist' Gibson in it.

Quick summary: All God's Chilluns is American, all races is Catholic American, gunz, God, God, gunz, etc. Add in some token scenes with the NVA, which boil down to their commander admiring the brave Children of  GOP God, and a token Real Person NVA Soldier for Human Interest. The [presumably CGI] Thuds and Skyraiders weren't bad, but the rest of the film was unmitigated shite.

It also left out what happened over the next day or two, when the NVA handed them their ass.

I have read that some Russian WW2 machine guns had a port for the crew to pee into.  So in the heat of battle with the bullets singing around him, wee Sergei had to stand up and keep his Johnson steady for the time it took, taking care not to get too close.  It was probably treason for a machine gunner to take a leak anywhere else.

The Vickers is a water cooled design so in an emergency and scarcity of potable water (which had to be carried to the front by hand) it was supposedly quite common to just use wee.

The cooling 'jacket' didn't require the wee to actually touch any moving parts so aside from an iffy smell I don't think it'd cause a problem.

A bit of a film-fest on my flight back from Japan, as my seats headphone jack was busted, so it was off to the iPad. I watched del Torro’s “Cronos”, then a Vietnam film, Hamburger Hill”, and finally an old Wesley Snipes and Dennis Hopper Police procedural, “Boiling Point”

Bait

Excellent. I loved the aesthetic; the dialogue, accents, characterisation were spot on - or at least instantly recognisable

I am neither a fisherman or a second home owner, but I am Cornish.
As a middle class graduate in Bristol now, it raised interesting questions about which side of the line I'm on   ;)

I noticed that an unsubstantiated subsidiary use of the water jacket was to make tea. Must have tasted bloody funny.

Every now and then, fboab has a Great Idea. This evening's delight was "Once were Warriors".

Apparently she thought I needed to see the grungier side of New Zealand, so I wouldn't view it all as looking like Hobbiton.

Well - she achieved that goal  :o.

Superb film. Grim, but so well-made.

Saw it on the big screen when it came out, but I think I lent my VHS copy to someone a good few years ago and never saw it again. Must see if I can find it on DVD

ETA - less than three quid. Ordered. Thank you for the reminder.

Next up, Bad Taste (1987)[1] and Black Sheep (2006) double bill?   ;D

Agreed.

Sad. Poignant. Not ‘Once Were Soldiers’.
It is simpler than it looks.

Les Ripoux, 1984 corrupt-cop comedy. Bloody funny then, still is but would have been funnier with closed captions.

That film has been listed as required viewing on several social worker courses.

Temuera Morrison is one hell of an actor. I think Jake the Muss is possibly the most frightening character I've seen in film.

The Boat (2018)

A fisherman discovers an abandoned boat in heavy fog, and proceeds to have a *really* bad day.  This one is to that bit in Dead Calm where John is desperately trying to stop the yacht from sinking and rescue his wife from the psychopath what The Martian is to the CO2 scrubber scene in Apollo 13.  About half the film is devoted to the protagonist being stuck in a toilet with a head injury, trying to make sense of the noises coming from outside.  This is infinitely more compelling than it sounds.

About halfway through you realise this is in fact a supernatural horror film (not a genre I have much time for), rather than a claustrophobic survival drama, but it doesn't ruin the whole thing like the graceless genre-shift at the end of The Prestige.

All Is Lost (2013)

A pleasingly competent, if fatally overconfident, Robert Redford has a really bad day in a boat.  He wisely avoids going to the loo at any point, and nothing supernatural occurs.  The drama is sufficiently well-paced that you don't really have time to mutter "EPIRB".

We enjoyed this, though it was never as funny as the books.  It was my first foray into the world of Asterix since loooord knows when and it got really quite good and right into the spirit of the original books towards the end.  Certainly it was way better than the film (well animated film) versions I saw done in the 1980s.

And it turns out - my wife had never even heard of Asterix and Obelix before. :jurek:  We have an eight year old grandson (hers not mine really) and now I know what I'm going to be getting him for his birthday.  Some Asterix books, yay!
(hopefully he won't tell us they're crap as he did when we tried to get him to watch Aquaman the other week)

Rear Window was on Film 4 this afternoon.  I am mostly on gardening leave, so there.

This Sporting Life. Wanted to throw something at the tv when the loose forward
character (Frank) had his feet up on a chair in a restaurant when dining with Margaret,
and when he was acting in an oafish manner to other diners.

Watch Touching the Void if you really want to be put off  :-D   Though it's also an awe inspiring tale of survival against massive odds

Well that’s a shame. I went to FACT (local Picturehouse) to see Taxi Driver on a proper screen. 35mm film print.  They couldn’t get the sound to work & stopped it after 10 minutes. Now queuing for a refund.  I had to sit through 30 minutes of crap adverts first  :(
