Bikehike uses Bing
« on: 05 April, 2013, 11:20:31 pm »
I've just been playing with Bikehike, looking at some cycle routes in the Czech republic, and it's loading Bing in the window that normally has either the OS Landranger map or the elevation data in it. It didn't do this when I was using it yesterday.

I'm not sure how useful Bing is. I think it would be more use to have Open Cycle Maps in one window and Googlemaps in the other, for non-UK destinations.

What does it load from Bing? I'm no fan of Microsoft, but one thing that Bing maps offers, which many people don't know about, is 1:25k Os mapping of the entire UK

It seems it offers precisely that - except, since I'm mapping a route from Prague to Vienna, OS maps aren't particularly helpful.

When plotting a UK route, scrolling whilst the mouse is over the secondary window moves seamlessly from 1:50000 to 1:25000.

Edit: I didn't know that Bing maps were Microsoft-owned.

I think that it switches to Bing when the OS daily tile limit is exceeded so you will need to do more late night route planning if you want to use this effect again.
