Go Guttenplan!

The Cambridge mob were pretty much a one-man team but what an impressive performance he put in. And to come from behind like that - it was thrilling!

Slight aside: am I imagining it, or did the female UCL captain seem disconcertingly broad of shoulder and deep of voice?

Um, no - I think she may have chopped and changed.

Last week's was a good game, too. Top programme. With UC, Ray Mears and James May, the BBC is spoiling us.

Guttenplan is fecking scary. Kudos to the UCL team (my Uni) for leading for so long but that dastardly mad-eyed chap from Emmanuel was just trimble-esque and triumphed. Yah boo sucks.

I think she may have chopped and changed.

That was my assumption. I don't want to sound judgmental, but I did find her a bit distracting.

Mind you, I also found the man in the silly hat distracting.  ;D

I must admit that I didn't notice it after a minute or two. She came across as enjoying herself, and was taking the game in just the right spirit.

There are usually far more distracting things there - some of those students are really going to regret those hairstyles and outfits when they show their children the recordings.  :-[

I don't think she will have any children any time soon.  Unless some incredible medical advances occur.  Or she has a change of plan.

Without wishing to get all P&OBI:

(a) if she decides she's a she, that's good enough for me.
(b) thankfully this is 2009 and we now realise that loving, stable adoptive homes can be provided by a whole range of people.

And she rocked on UC - I thought her performance as an individual was every bit as good as that Guttenplan bloke. He just got a few good answers in at crucial moments.

Absolutely. I didn't mean to suggest otherwise. Probably shouldn't have brought it up. Sorry.

Yeah, she was good, but it was the sheer bloody range of Guttenplan's general knowledge that impressed me - obscure stuff in both science and arts. He was the same in the previous rounds.

+ 1   She was a great captain, leading the team and being ably assisted by them. Good showing by UCL.

Monday's UC was one of the most enjoyable I've seen - Grahl and Woolley for UCL were excellent, but Emma's comeback was pretty sensational.  I too was very impressed by the breadth of Guttenplan's knowledge!

Since the unfortunate demise of Fifteen-to-One, University Challenge is the best GK quiz show on TV.  Weakest Link questions are far too easy, Eggheads is tediously slow-paced, and I've never understood the enduring appeal of Mastermind - the specialist subjects are seldom of any interest and the GK questions aren't half as well-pitched as UC's.

I am loving Eggheads, especially as in the past few weeks the challengers have been beating the Eggheads, it makes it very enjoyable to see them squirming in discomfort. Anyone want to form a team and challenge them? Come on, am sure that we could be much better than some of the idiots that appear on that show  :D

Victoria Coren - I so would!   :D

My college - Sidney Bumsecks Sussex - only qualified for UC once during my four years, and I think the team comprised the 'in' crowd of barflies.  Needless to say they got trounced.

+1

I think UC is the purest quiz/knowledge show. The others are trying too hard to 'entertain'.

MM perhaps appeals due to the everyman approach. Or maybe the solo effort: gladiatorial vs team-sport.

The R4 shows mentioned are just dire!

I love this one too.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

I'm in for any quizzing!!!! If we need selection heats, I can recommend a few pub quizzes in London...

Paging Tom B:  How about getting a bunch of YACFers in to watch the show, and using them for the knockabout game in the morning?  it'd make a change from the finance team...   ;D

A fine idea  :) IIRC, we have had rehearsal teams of non-employees before. Next recordings are late February, so will try to remember to mention it to the production manager in the new year.

OK guys - the Eggheads have been unbeaten for a verra long time and the money is now up to 25K. We have to do something about this. Who wants to form a team?

The subjects covered ( I think) are:

Science
Film and Television (I'm up for this)
Arts and Books(up for this too)
Geography
Politics
Sport
