The elephant in the room - it's in York.  A long way from the centres of population.  Were it to be further south, it might do better.

But then it would be full of bloody southerners...*

We hope to be at Mildenhall in the future subject to having some work to generate some salary ::-)

ETA: I could cycle there with lightweight camping kit but that's not satisfactory really is it.
Rhetorical question.

I don't think Mel will be crowing - more likely shaking her head with an air of resignation...

The fact is that when she was involved the Rally wasn't short of sponsors.

Swindon to York is two or three trains, the best part of a day, and a king's ransom, or over 4 hours in a car.
Hard work sometimes pays off in the end, but laziness ALWAYS pays off NOW.

Population centres . . .

Direct lines, no changes from:

London
Birmingham
Manchester
Leeds
Newcastle
Edinburgh
Glasgow

(apologies to other major cities I've missed off)

There are few cities in the country with such good rail links. That's one of the reasons I live here (since I used to contract all over the UK).

York residents do their best to forget that there is a direct train to Hull.

There is nothing whatever to stop us, as a forum, decide to go camping in or near York and organise the odd ride and camping trip. I can personally vouch for the campsite at Acaster Malbis and the adjacent pub.

I can honestly say it is the only pub I have ever been to which served such a large quantity that I couldn't finish my meal. Mind you, not many hours previously I had had lunch courtesy of Mr. & Mrs. SteveGT!

Nice little WW2 airfield there too.

York is my favourite English city. Easy to get to and from, great history, excellent pubs, theatre, music, architecture, etc. I did my basic training nearby, and thoroughly enjoyed my time there. Shame the York Rally has failed, but that seems no reason not to go anyway?

Which is great, it keeps the riff raff from Swindon away...

I was very sad, if not surprised, to read about this. Almost entirely because the Rally is the way I meet up with folk like all you lot.

So, as Wowbagger says, let's have a YACF rally instead!

(Since CL has run into timing issues for the night ride, could something be organised for an alternative weekend when EldestCub is free?)

One of my best York Rally memories, is sitting in the Cakeavan, introducing MFWHTBAB to folk, some of whom I was only meeting for the first time myself, but felt I already knew from here, eating Marj's jammy flapjack.  ;D
If I had a baby elephant, it could help me wash the car. If I had a car.

Is there a plan B for that weekend?  :-\

Or shall I try to cadge a lift up to Portmahomack for the Tongue Twister?
