Anyone made a tyre belt?
« on: 13 March, 2018, 11:44:21 am »
I have a few old tyres lying around, it could be fun to make them into belts.
Anyone tried it? Recommend any howto guides?
What sort of tyre to use? Where to buy suitable buckles and bolts/rivets etc?

Our beloved Arch, OTP, used to recycle old tyres into belts.

She hasn't been on the forum for over 3 years. I have contact details for Mr. Arch and will send you a PM.

I can see a thread developing:-  Which tyres for belts?  Marathons for standard or even rugged belts (holding up cargo trousers, etc.)  Slicks when you have tummy trouble and need speed rather than reliability?

Some of us would dream, DREAM, of getting into a belt that was a mere 26 inches....
Besides, it wouldn't be audacious if success were guaranteed.

The circumference of a 26 inch tyre is around 2 metres!

I have seen bike tyre belts on the internet .... really good quality:

I do however have a pair of sandals that I bought in South Africa, which are made of car tyres:

I reckon I could make one from innertubes. It would probably be slightly elasticated.

I do have a belt made from an inner tube, bought it from a chap at a Bath market. It stretches too much. Wish I'd bought a tyre one.

The market for them is quite big I think, tour companies could offer to convert into a belt the tyre you rode, for instance, across France.
Besides, it wouldn't be audacious if success were guaranteed.

I have an inner tube belt. They used to sell them in Brixton Cycles. Never wear it, it's too stretchy.

I reckon if it were two ply rubber and/or had a webbing core for a section of its length, I could get the stretchiness right.
